SCARLETT
For four more days, we were living life like any other normal family would. The anxiety of thinking about Mindy or Caleb was pushed back as I accepted that the two of them were most likely dead. I had come to terms with it just as everyone else had seemed to. I had learned to get used to the nightmares I got every night. I was no longer waking up in a panic, hearing them scream and beg for help. Some part of me always wondered if it was because deep down, I knew the truth. They were gone and we were going to do nothing about it.
We were still at Cyrus' and Fiona's home. There had been no issues with anyone finding us.The only problems came from inside the home itself with their eldest son making comments about how he hoped we would be gone soon. I never blamed him. Being here was a huge risk for him and his younger brother. It was nice to see how protective he was of his brother. I never had that growing up. It made me envy the two of them.
"Mind if I join you?" Fiona asked, snapping me from my thoughts.
"Sure." I smiled up at her as she offered a mug of what I presumed to be coffee. The first sip of the bittersweet liquid confirmed my guess.
I had been sitting on their patio swing for hours now, unable to sleep. It was on their back patio where trees covered the view of any unwelcomed guests. The constant motion of the swing mixed with the slight chill breeze had been calming. One could almost fall asleep from it but I couldn't. Not when I had too much on my mind.
"I come out here to think as well." Fiona started. "It's so peaceful. When I have too much on my mind, I come out here." She sighed. "So, tell me. What's on your mind? Boy troubles?"
"Something like that." I shrug, taking a sip of my coffee.
"Hmm. Unfortunately I'm no expert in that department. I've been with the same man since high school. Cyrus and I were high school sweethearts. Prom king and queen. We've never fought or argued about our future. Some would say it was meant to be because we wanted the same things. I've never met a more perfect match."
"Yeah, well that doesn't exactly help my situation." I replied bluntly.
She was taken aback by my response. A look of hurt crossed her face but she was quick to shrug it off. "Well I can't exactly help without knowing what's on your mind, now can I?"
I sighed. "There's a little girl in the hands of my sadistic father. And no one is doing anything about it. How would you feel being put in that situation?"
"You worry for Mindy and your friend? Caleb I believe his name is? Well if she has her father around, wouldn't he protect her from your father?"
"That's the thing. I don't know. For all I know, she could already be dead. And Caleb? Darren probably pulled the trigger on him the second he saw him."
"If you truly believed that, then you wouldn't still be here." She stated the obvious.
"What can I do but wait for this mysterious person Xavier has called for? They must be capable of more than Xavier is letting on."
"That's always the worst part. The secrets. You'll get used to it." She got up, going back inside.
For the rest of the morning, I remained outside, enjoying the peace and quiet. By the time I came back inside Zayn, Cyrus and Xavier were discussing things at the table. They had a plan but the second I came over, it was immediately hidden. The whole situation left me uneasy as I knew they were hiding something and I just couldn't figure out what it was and why they were so intent on keeping me out of it.
As the day went on, they kept going in and out of the house without saying a word except that I had to stay put. As infuriating as it was to be told what to do, I knew it was because they knew I would walk over to my father in an exchange for Mindy and Caleb. There wasn't a day where I hadn't wanted to do that. The nightmares were starting again and I needed them to stop.
Fiona and I were eating lunch together at the kitchen table. The men were out again, without telling us where they were going. I had a feeling she knew what was going on and she was just doing everything capable to distract me. It felt as if I was the only one in the dark. With more secrets forming around me that I couldn't reach.
By the time darkness consumed the sky, the guys were pulling up. Only Cyrus and Zayn got out of the car. Xavier stayed on the driver's side as if he was waiting for something. Before I could even ask Zayn or Cyrus, Zayn walked over to me. There was a look on his face I had never seen before. Uncertainty mixed with fear. Something had happened and I had a feeling I was just about to find out what.
"Get in the car, Scar. Xavier needs to show you something." He spoke in a serious low tone.
"What's going on?"
"Just go. You'll know soon enough."
Knowing he wouldn't answer my question, I walked out the door, getting into the passenger side of the car. Before I could even ask Xavier what was going on, he turned the radio to high volume as it played EDM music, driving us off into the night without a single word.
Turning the volume down, I turned to him as he focused on the road. "What the hell is going on? I'm sick of the secrets, Xavier."
He sighed, white knuckling the steering wheel. "Can you just trust me for once? Besides, you'll find out when we get there." He snapped.
Taken aback, I zipped my lips as he turned the music back up. The drive had roughly been ten minutes before Xavier pulled into an old motel. One that looked like it could use some renovations. He was quick to turn off the car, leaving us in silence for a few seconds before he opened his side door. He glanced at me, smirking.
"Come on. Let's go."
Following him to a set of stairs that lead to a second row of motel rooms, he led me to the very end, knocking on the door with a strange 1-3-1 pattern. The cold wind sent chills throughout my body as we stood there, waiting for whoever was inside to open the door. After a minute, I could hear someone unlocking the door, opening it. The second I saw who stood before us, all blood drained from my face. I was left in a state of shock as I observed the woman before me. She was supposed to be dead. I watched her die with my own eyes.
"Mom?"
She smirked. "Hello, Scarlett."
