Rylie chuckles. "Me? An Avenger? I'm nothing like you or Steve! I'm just a normal girl!"
"I can argue with that", a voice calls from behind the pair. Nick Fury. "Your mom requested to see you, she needs to tell you something she won't tell anyone else."
Rylie nods. "I'll be right there." She takes off her gloves and Fury takes her to the prison where her parents are in. They are separated by only a wall. A guard takes Rylie's mom to a different room. High tech cuffs will make sure she doesn't try anything.
"Hello, Rylie", her mom starts.
"Just tell me what you want to tell me, no 'I'm sorry' or 'We shouldn't have done it'", Rylie hisses.
Her mom sighs. "I wasn't going to say anything like that. I need to tell you about your past in New York. You barely remember anything about it, right?"
"Yes, you said that's because I was still a kid."
"You were 6 when we left, most people still have at least one memory from when they were under 6 years old."
"What do you want to say?"
"The memories were removed, for your own sake, by HYDRA."
"What?!"
"You were experimented on as a kid. That's how you got your strength and endurance. I gave you that one trick to take breaks, even when you don't need one, so you'd never found out about your powers."
Rylie runs a hand over her face, all the information running through her head. "So, you had me and you thought: 'hey, let's let a mad doctor experiment on her and then remove her memories'? What kind of mother are you?!"
"I'm not your mother. You were abandoned, HYDRA took you in and experimented. Killian, your dad, and I got assigned to raise you, away from HYDRA, when they found out about the risk of the Avengers getting to know about HYDRA, until you were old enough."
"What the fuck?! You can't be serious."
"I am. They will come for you. Except for the Winter Soldier, you were their greatest asset. Don't try to run, you'll only make it worse."
Rylie shakes her head. "No, I'm not letting them take me, not now, not ever."
Suddenly her mother speaks three words in Russian. Guards try to stop her, but it is too late. Rylie's memories of the 6 forgotten years have returned. Her mother looks at her proudly, thinking this was all what's needed to get Rylie on HYDRA's side.
Rylie storms out and returns to the training room to get her frustration off. Hit after hit strikes the bag. One for her mother for never actually loving her, one for her father for being the way he is, one for HYDRA for destroying her childhood, one for herself because she never noticed the signs. So she keeps going, until it's the middle of the night. Heavy breaths fall out, tears streaming down her face, her hair disheveled.
"Fuck. Fuck. Fuck. Fuck", she hisses to no one in particular. The last few days were too much. She sits down and leans her head against the wall. She grabs her phone and calls the only person she wants to talk to, right now.
"Hey, Emily?"
"Rylie? Alles oké? Je klinkt alsof je gehuild hebt!" ("Everything okay? You sound like you've cried!")
"Mijn leven is helemaal verkloot." ("My life is all fucked up.")
She gives her the whole story, even telling her about the Avengers.
"Shit... Da's... veel... Weet je wat, ik ga nu op een vliegtuig en kom naar New York. Ik ga jou daar niet alleen laten lijden!" ("Shit... That's... a lot... You know what, I'm going on a plane, right now, and I come to New York. I ain't letting you suffer alone!")
"Nee. Het gaat. Je moet niet komen, ik wil gewoon met je praten als ik het nodig heb.." ("No. I'm fine. You don't need to come, I just want to talk to you in case I need to.")
"Oké, maar als je wilt dat ik kom, zeg het gewoon." ("Okay, but if you want me to come, just say so.")
"Dank je, Em..." ("Thanks, Em...")
"Alles voor mijn bestie en favoriete Avenger!" ("Anything for my bestie and favorite Avenger!")
This makes Rylie chuckle. "Ik ben nog geen Avenger." ("I'm not an Avenger yet.")
"Maar het deed je wel lachen!" ("But it did make you laugh!")
"Je bent geweldig..." ("You're awesome")
"Ik weet het." ("I know.")
"Ik spreek je later. Ik ga nu proberen te slapen, als dat kan." ("I'll talk to you later. I'm gonna try to sleep, if that's possible.")
"Vraag anders aan Cap of hij een slaapliedje wil zingen!" ("Ask Cap if he wants to sing a lullaby!")
"Ha ha. Doei!" ("Bye.")
"Bye."
