Vampires

I awoke in a bed, blood dark silk sheets engulfed my body. What happened? Was this a dream? Where is Amber? My head was spinning. My eyes darted across the dark room to see a door leading outside, the Chiffon curtains flowing in the wind that swept inside. The only light gracing the room seemed to stem from there. I got up, my body aching. Stumbling slowly I stand in the doorway. The moon glistening enough to hurt my eyes. I edge closer out to see this door did not lead to the outside but to a balcony.

A stone balustrade separating me from the edge of plummeting what looked like 30 feet beneath me. Surrounded by castle pillars and old black stone looking out onto valleys in the hills. Where am I? Just as I question this, I hear a creak behind me. I turn to see Amber in a silk white gown. Any time I'd seen Amber she was always in white, that purity had a hold on me.

"Where am I Amber? I thought this was a prank?" I ask confused.

"A prank? No Sam you are what I've been searching for." She says calmly.

She walks to stand next to me, looking out into the beautiful scene. The moon blessing her pale face.

"Why me?" I ask.

She grabs my hand, her cold skin feeling like daggers.

"Because you are special." She turns her head and smiles.

As bizarre as all of this felt, the comfort of her hand holding mine and her gaze falling onto me, I felt safe.

"Listen Sam I can't tell you everything, there's answers even I do not know yet, but I need you to stay with me. It's a lot to ask but please." This was the first time I felt like Amber was being sincere. Her true self.

I nod in agreement and ask what it is I need to do and she simply responded with "I don't know yet." All of these questions and getting no answers felt frustrating but I still felt like I needed to be there for her.

"What are you?" I ask "How could you do what you did by the lake?"

"If I told you, you wouldn't believe me." She said, looking down and laughing in a way like even she didn't believe it.

"I will protect you though Sam, I promise you that."

I look at her and then back towards the valleys. The mysteries felt like they had just begun, and I was right.

"I have to go, but just stay and enjoy this. If you need anything just let me know, I'll bring you some food shortly." Leaving as she said so.

"Guess I'm just waiting here then" I said continuing to look out.

I didn't enjoy being left alone with my thoughts, especially in a situation like this. I wanted to explore, find out more about what was going on. But I didn't know what rested beyond those large wooden doors and I wasn't sure if I wanted to find out. I returned inside to lie down. Try to clear my head in some way.

Everything here felt dark and unsettling. Everything except Amber. After trying to settle I decided to search the room instead. My hand grazing the pictures hung on the wall as I inspected them. In each painting it looked as though a demonic creature was feeding on women. These women were unclothed and had a single hand placed above their forehead as the creature fed on their necks. How strange.

I glanced at the furniture that looked as though it had been around centuries before I. What is this place?

Just as I finished scanning the walls Amber returned.

"See you've seen the paintings then?" She asked.

"Yeah, they are very strange aren't they." I chuckle "It would be crazy if things like that existed." My eyes darted back to Amber to validate my suspicion. Cold, beautiful and can soar into the sky, nothing human could do those things.

Her face drops and my suspicion confirms.

"Amber no matter what you are, I'm here for you. If you would've hurt me you would've already, so please be honest with me here. What am I getting myself into?" I plead.

She sighs

"Our origins spring from vampiric lores and you are right Sam." She pauses "I'm fast and strong beyond any human strength, I could kill anything if I wanted, but I don't want to hurt you. I can promise you that."

I sit down on the bed in disbelief, vampires?

After 5 minutes of silence, I gather my thoughts. I look to Amber and see her waiting in anticipation for me to say something. Anything.

"I thought I'd be afraid, but when I look at you and when I'm around you I can't imagine being without you. Something within you calls to me and I don't want to breathe again until I'm in your presence. I couldn't sleep, I couldn't eat. You are the blood that pumps in my veins." I reach for her hands and I look into her eyes, trying to show her how much I mean the words that escape my mouth.

She looks to me, irresistance taking over her eyes. She kisses me and it feels like my heart is yearning for more. Her hair intertwined between my fingers as we kiss.

Nothing else matters anymore, I just need her.

She pulls away and looks down, our foreheads touching as I gasp for air.

"Sam I want to, I do." She pauses "I just can't until we know what you are." She backs away from me. A distraught look on her face and leaves the room.

I race to the door after her but as I go to push the handle down, I realise that it has been locked.

That piece of my soul left again, yearning for more.
