"I promise to be a better Watcher than him or any other. I will protect you until my very last breath. I swear."June sniffed, wiping away tears and facing the floor. "Thank you."Eiran replied happily, knowing for a fact he had someone like June for his Watcher.

"I should get going. If you want to stay here and look through some of these books you're more than welcome. Just think about the book you want and the magic should respond to you."She informed, hurrying out the door.

Eiran heard the large rock doors of the entrance closing after her with a large thud. He looked at the open pages of the small book in front of him. "Eliza Grey...why us huh? Why were we picked for this? Do you know? Do any of the Shadows?"Eiran spoke to himself. A small noise from behind him took him from his thoughts.

A large book with a thick leather cover hovered in the air, landing just as the first did. There was something strange about this book. The others just had solid colors for the covers, this one had a design. The design was strange but familiar. It looked like a jumble of the different element signs in one.

Eiran studied the strange book and opened it, the cover hitting the table with a thud.

May 23rd, 3902                                                                                                                                      Dear diary,

I am the 997th Shadow. I learned recently that not many people realize what the Shadow is or why it's here. I believe I have been chosen to change that. Those with superior power like mine deserve the spotlight. I am at the top of the world, the most powerful. People with little or no power shall never know what it feels like to have control. I feel it is only fair of me as the gracious Shadow I am to put them out of their misery. Nomadges have no true purpose in this world. Only the powerful can survive the judgment of greatness. I shall be their judge, and they shall fall.                                                                                                              Sincerely,
Vincent Carson

"This is the Shadow that Annalise talked about. This is the Shadow that treated nomadges horribly. Why did this book show up? Did I do something?"Eiran questioned himself and figured it was just an accident.

Eiran placed Vincent's book back and focused on Eliza. "Might as well start with the beginning."He whispered to himself. "Now, how do I 'connect' with her? June mentioned something about that."He looked around, trying to find some kind of clue as to how to connect with the mysterious Shadows of the past.

Suddenly, the giant table in the middle of the room illuminated with bright red and disintegrated. "Red? Everything has been blue. What's going on?"Eiran fumbled around the room, trying to keep himself from nearly falling over.

The ground below opened up, a spiral staircase swirling down a dark, ominous pit. Suddenly, swirls of intricate detail like the rest of the town lit up the walls but this glow was bright red. Eiran took a cautious step forward and down the stairs.

Reaching the final step, Eiran was surprised to find another, slightly smaller room. "That was fast."A gentle voice came from the corner. "Who are you? And how did you get down here?"Eiran questioned the darkness. "Relax child. I'm only here because you wanted me to be here."The voice claimed.

"What do you mean?"Eiran asked, now very confused. "You're holding my diary. You did something for that passageway to open up and for me to appear.", "Eliza Grey..."Eiran was now starting to understand. "There it is."She stated, an outline of a human now becoming noticeable.  There was a slight blue glow around her, almost like an aura, but it was different. "This is where you go to communicate with us, your past lives."She explained.

"I have so many questions. Wh-"Eiran started but was quickly cut off by Eliza. "Hold on there. I have a few things you need to know first. One, you can't ask anything that isn't in our diaries. Chances are, we probably wouldn't know the answer ourselves otherwise. And two, you need to remember, just because we aren't alive, doesn't mean some of us aren't dangerous. You don't need to be able to feel to touch someone with darkness. Just keep that in mind when you talk to some of the Shadows."Eliza's expression fell.

"Do you mean Vincent Carson?"Eiran looked up at her, seeing as she was towering over him. Her green eyes stared down at him. "Vincent was the absolute greatest shame that came from the Shadows. He tried to wipe out a whole community. I need you to understand that while this is true, dangerous can mean many things. Danger has a way of hiding itself as many things. Joy, happiness, love even. Our job is to recognize when these things become dangerous and stop them before they can harm us and the ones we love."She advised, her outline now becoming fuzzy.

"Wait. How will I know when it becomes dangerous? How will I know how to stop it? How did you figure this all out on your own?"Eiran pleaded for answers. "You will learn with time. Remember, I am not the only other Shadow. You have 1003 others here to help you. You have our whole lives at your fingertips, and you can contact us whenever you wish."Eliza reminded with a kind smile.

"I have a problem. Everyone expects me to defeat the president and bring peace and magic back to the world."Eiran explained quickly. "And you don't think you can do it. Eiran Amos. You were granted this sacred power for a reason. I promise you every other Shadow has been in your place before."Eliza assured calmly.

"Vincent was granted with the power too. How did that go again?"Eiran questioned. "Vincent was corrupted into thinking his enemy was the nomadges by an evil person! You are not Vincent! He has been shunned as a disgrace for years!"She exclaimed, leaving Eiran speechless.

"Evil person?"Eiran asked sheepishly. Her eyes went wide and she backed off. "Never mind Vincent. He is nothing more than an awful piece of history we all wish we could erase."She stated before finally disappearing into thin air, leaving Eiran with nothing but his own thoughts and a dusty book.
