Ch 35: There Is a Slight Problem

Ty's POV

I don't spare her body a second glance as I spin around, breaking into a run as my gaze catches on Jason's struggling form. "Jason, duck!" I shout, and then I'm scooping a discarded dagger off the ground and sending it flying in the jumbo squid's direction.

"Thanks, Ty!" he replies, popping back up to slice one of the squid's tentacles with the wither sword. Within seconds, the slimy body is shrinking, shriveling, writhing in pain on the ground. It lets out a distorted squeak, and then there's nothing left save for a normal squid about to die from lack of water. One of the sane Recruits takes care of that, stabbing it right through the eye and forcing it to puff away into white smoke, and then Jason runs off toward another jumbo squid.

"Ashley!" I yell, shoving a sword over her head and impaling the crazy Recruit that had been sneaking up behind her. Holding his arm and cringing in pain, he backs away, and I glance around quickly before looking back to Ashley. "Where's Annie? I thought she came with us."

"She did, but she left just a while ago to help out Quentin, Ian, and Tiffany at the Respawn Machine. How many jumbo squids are left?" she asks, being entirely serious for once.

"Ah, looks like three. Jason'll have 'em down in no time, though. I got rid of Alesa, by the way."

"I saw that," Ashley sighs, wrinkling her nose, and I actually feel bad for a second.

"Oh, I forgot! You two were, like, best friends, weren't you?"

She shrugs, feigning indifference. "Yeah, well. Anyw- What?"

beep beep beep

"What the heck? Omigosh, what if there's a burglar about to blow up my house or something!? I'm going to die!"

There's the strange, irrational Ashley we all know and love. Sort of. "First of all, why would a burglar blow up your house? And why would you die because of it when you're half a city away from that house?"

She puzzles over this for a moment, but then she gives up and shrugs again. "It could happen!"

I raise an eyebrow questioningly. "Uh, sure. Well, how do you even know someone is breaking into your house?"

"I got a notification on my phone – that's what the beeping was earlier. See, my phone is hooked up to the security system at my house so that whenever someone opens the door, I get beeped at."

I tilt my head. "But why would anyone be breaking into your home in the middle of a freaking squid battle?" This doesn't make nearly enough sense.

"Beats me," she says, shrugging for the third time today.

"Duck again," I command, and then another mental Recruit is stumbling away from us. Ashley nods her thanks, and I nod back and then glance around the city center. "Looks like Jason's gotten all the squids down to normal size – now we just have to take care of the insane Recruits."
