Chapter 24: Face to Face

Author's POV:

It was the next day and Khushi couldn't focus on her work at all. She had at least fifteen emails to reply to, five client advice letters and three client meetings to attend over family and employment matters.

The thought of attending an in-person meeting with three different clients made her uneasy and sick—not because it meant communicating—using her vocals that she's slowly forgetting how to use. Her mouth has been dry ever since she realized Samar is in close proximity to her, to her firm. Going to meetings means she has to walk past the receptionist area and main sitting area. What if he's here. In the waiting room?

Khushi doesn't recall seeing an urgent appointment note next to Samar's name yesterday but there are two things that she's learnt as a lawyer; money can buy anything—it can buy freedom for criminals and within seconds you can have a client or lose one. It won't surprise her if Samar used his money to get an urgent interview with a lawyer.

She massaged her temple and prayed he wouldn't be here today. Not tomorrow. Not ever. Signing and wincing from pain, she pulled her drawer open to have some painkillers when her phone buzzed for attention.

Her face broke into a small smile.

Yug: How many people are you going to help get a divorce today?

Before she could type, he instantly bombarded her with another message.

Yug: And how many of those poor men are going to lose their property?

Despite the tension in her heart, Khushi manages to type a witty reply.

Khushi: If you continue disrupting me like this, the next case on my radar will be ours. And I will take 90% of your property.

She giggles to herself, already imagine Yug's expressions. He definitely saw the message. Although he's never on his phone when they're together—his full attention on his wife—but his replies are always instant. Khushi likes to believe it's because he clutches his phone in his hand, waiting for her.

She can picture him moving back in his chair, chuckling at her reply. He would be slightly shaking his head, breaking into a louder laugh and smacking his phone on his forehead, gushing in peace. And he was. She was right.

Yug didn't hesitate once when he replied with full honesty.

Yug: You can have it now but in return I need an indefinite contract signed by you.

Khushi: Which is?

Before Khushi could read and wait for his reply, the receptionist had come to summon her, "your client is here, Khushi." With a reluctant nod, Khushi stood up, put her phone on silent, and left her office with her laptop.

Yug: A contract that affirms you are to spend the rest of your life with me and only me.

A minute later.

Yug: And it's not up for negotiation.

When he didn't hear back, he could tell she's back to her demanding work. "Whoever said marrying a lawyer isn't for the weak, he was right." With slight disappointment, Yug turns his attention back to reality and squints at his bright desktops screen.
