Today is bustling with activity as the fair takes over the campus, with booths scattered around and students bustling about, many carrying bouquets of flowers for their special someone. It's like a belated Valentine's Day celebration for UP students, complete with surprise gestures and an evening concert featuring popular Filipino artists.
"I just wish someone would give me flowers today..." Sophia mused as we strolled through the field, taking in the festivities.
"Ran will definitely give you one," I quipped, earning a playful scoff from her. "Eww, I'd rather not have one than receive one from him," she retorted, wrinkling her nose in mock disgust.
"Hey, look, there's even a jail booth! They handcuff people around the campus. I hope I get handcuffed with my crush," Sophia exclaimed, easily distracted by the sight.
We had agreed to stick together at the event, and I had already filled them in on my decision to take a break from studies and focus on work for a while. They still felt guilty about the scholarship situation, but I reassured them to enjoy the event.
"Are you really considering stopping? There are many scholarships out there," Ran chimed in, the teasing tone from earlier giving way to seriousness.
"Hey Ran, he said not to mention it now," Sophia chided, giving him a light slap on the shoulder.
"I'm sorry, I just can't imagine myself studying this traumatic course without you," Ran admitted, a tinge of sadness in his expression.
"It's okay, I'm still thinking about it. Don't worry," I reassured them, placing my hands on both their shoulders as we walked across the grass.
I just realize now that regardless how confident, independent and responsible I am, I wouldn't make it this far without these two. They are my comfort and happy place. Things always get a little easier when I'm with them. It's only now that I'm processing that I'll definitely leave them behind if I stop and work first for a living.
I feel like out there, I can do everything on my own. I already managed, and still have been surviving. But with my friends, all things are bearable.
"T-thank You guys for everything, really... I suddenly cracked out of nowhere. Pulling them tightly and stopping myself from crying after saying those.
"Stop, don't make me cry. We'd always be there for each other" Sophia being the overdramatic queen wiping her eyes with a tissue.
"Love you.." , Ran added, affectionately patting my head.
"What if we go to a bar later after the event?" Sophia suggested, earning enthusiastic agreement from Ran.
"That's the best thing I've heard from you today," Ran teased, eliciting a playful swat from Sophia.
"I'll decide later. Let's grab something to eat first," I suggested, leading the way to the cafeteria as we continued to cherish each other's company.
