Remembering Dusk

Esther began to fight back, not knowing if she was to win or lose. She pushed Them over, and bolted into the house. Esther didn't have her keys on her person, so she couldn't lock the door. She surveyed the area for anything to help. A chair. Sure. A chair could work. She dragged the chair over to the door, and rested the door handle on the back of the chair.

"Esther, what are you doing? And where is everyone?" A familiar voice called from the top of the basement stairs. Dusk.

"Oh, nothing. I'm just blocking off the door from the monsters outside." Esther scoffed. Wouldn't everyone be aware of Them? I mean, Dusk never paid much attention to anyone or anything, but surely they could see that the world was going to shit?

"Are you being sarcastic? I mean, you aren't sarcastic a lot but-.." Dusk replied.

"Dusk, now isn't the time. Do you know where Aiden and Connor are? Aiden was here a second ago, I swear, but now he's gone."

"Well... I asked you where they were a minute ago. So, no, I don't know." Dusk shrugged, and turned to the stairs.

"They could be upstairs." Dusk thought idly.

"Though, if you're in a borderline apocalypse, that probably isn't the smartest thing to do." Esther retorted. "Aiden saw what was on TV, I'm sure. And he's way smarter than... well, actually... maybe not. Let's go."

"Esther. Esther!" Someone called out now. Esther opened her eyes.

"Yes?" She replied to whoever said that. Her mind was foggy; she couldn't remember where she was and when this was happening. Was it still Breakout Day's anniversary?

"Come downstairs. We need you to take a look at something.."

Esther grumbled. She hated this part of the effort plan. She was always working, always having to remember. She didn't want to remember.

Esther and Dusk made their way upstairs, Dusk being significantly slower.

"Come on, walk faster!" Esther snapped angrily. This was really annoying. Look, Esther adored Dusk. They had known each other since they were 7, so she somewhat had to. But they could be really frustrating at times, such as this.

However, Esther didn't have to be angry for long. The trip up was quick.

Suddenly, a scream from Connor's room echoed throughout the house.

"Connor?!" Dusk shouted worriedly. Esther had already ran to his room.

She gently opened the door...
