Your hair clung to your forehead, the cooled evening air giving you some relief from the hot environment. June always was hot, but today felt hotter than usual. Dismounting your horse, you allowed the nag to go off and graze with the others.

You felt a clap of a hand on your shoulder. Dutch. Your expression softened as you saw that wide smile on his face.

"Well done, Boy. We.. just might get out with this one. You did good today!" He praised, causing you to smile and look off to the side as you huffed a laugh.

"Go thank Arthur. I wouldn'ta been able to help had he not fished me out of that damned tent." You muttered, to which the older man laughed and went off to congregate with Hosea, Molly idly standing in his tent, watching people.

You escaped to the fire, taking off your hat and coat as you plopped them on the bench right next to you.

You felt eyes, Specifically on you. No-one else. You paused, whipping your head around before noticing Mary-Beth peeking at you from over her book. Once she realized she'd been caught, she buried herself back in her novel, a bashful expression on her face.

Arching a brow, you glanced around the womens tent. Karen and Tilly were laughing their asses off, poorly hiding their laughter behind their hands.

You sighed, indulging their teasing as you stood and approached, tucking your hands into your pockets as you towered over Mary Beth and the other women.

"There a problem, Miss?" You gently prompted, brows raising as you fought a smile, as if trying not to embarrass her more than her friends already have. Karen looked like she was about to piss herself laughing.

"Oh, No, Gosh, No," Your name stumbled out of her, nervously laughing as she closed her book, playing with a ribbon bookmark.

"I thought you had something to 𝘵𝘦𝘭𝘭 𝘩𝘪𝘮, Mary-Beth?" Karen taunted, to which Tilly giggled and Mary-Beth shot her a look. It was flattering, really. Being the center of the problem as you've just discovered.

"Did I say something?" You said through a nervous chuckle, leading Mary-Beth to standing up and abandoning her book, clasping her hands.

"I was just.. I just wanted to give you something, is all. Give me a moment, would you?" She softly answered, ending with a question as she studied your expression. There was a brief moment of vulnerability, and you had a choice. Do you embarrass her further, or endear her?

You went for the latter, nodding as you, quote, 'gave her a moment.' Mary-Beth hesitated, before stepping back and rifling through her beg, before stepping back and offering you a book. It looked new, hardly touched.

"I figured you'd like it, I don't know if you read, though." She mumbled, avoiding eye-contact for a moment as her eyes drifted, her hands twisting and fumbling.

You smiled, taking the book from her hands as you nodded. "....Thank you, Mary-Beth. That's.. Very sweet of you." You answered, narrowing your eyes a little bit as you waited for her to look at you again.

"You're very sweet." You repeated, trying to get the message through her head, Yet she simply nodded and retreated to the safety of her companions. Your smile never left your face as you skulked back to the fire.
