Prologue 🌿

Treekit trembled in response to the cold night. He was so scared of being taken ever since Larchkit went missing. "I don't want to be lost!" he whispered to the stars. He slowly drifted to sleep, shivering.

The next morning, Freshdawn, howled with grief, "My kit!" Whitekit yawned as she awoke. "Where's Treekit?" she asked nervously. "Gone." Freshdawn sobbed. Immediately as Meadowstar heard the cry's of the queens and kits, she called a meeting to order. "Cats who can catch their own prey, meet at the Gathering this sundown."

Chapter one 🐦

A screech of an owl pierced through the night. Quailpaw jolted awake. She missed her littermate, Blossomwish, who now slept in the medicine cat den. The other apprentices shivered and turned. It was so cold for newleaf...
Quailpaw heard a voice meow in distress but she couldn't tell where it came from. "Quailpaw! Ouch!"
It was Wetpaw. "What's wrong?" Quailpaw asked worriedly. "Your claw is unsheathed!" he mewed in pain. "Ah! Sorry!"
Wetpaw had just been made an apprentice a moon ago. He had a difficult history, his namesake being Wetfoot. His father, Moonpelt, was an untrustworthy cat in CloudClan. His mother, Beechshade, doubtably followed the warrior code; through it was rumored that Brightstar was going to make her the mentor of Sunnykit. Quailpaw hoped to Starclan that wouldn't happen. Since what Beechshade did to Dawnstream...

Quailpaw awoke again at dawn, to the panicked meows of cats. Mushroomtail and Yarrowfoot had been guarding the entrances to the camp in the night. Now they were yowling to the elders and the queens to run. Brightstar finally heard the screeches and put a stop to it. "False alarm." she shouted.
Mushroomtail looked traumatized. "I t-thought t-that I saw s-s-something— l-like a b-badger!" Blossomwish padded over. "I'll get you some yarrow. You're in shock."
Over by the Highrock, Yarrowfoot meowing something loudly.
"Know that I, Yarrowfoot, fought the badger while Mushroomtail caught a glimpse and is shocked by it. Comfort her and you may rejoice in the victory for the Clan." Some cats cheered, other cats smirked. Brightstar looked annoyedly at Yarrowfoot and said, "That will be enough." He turned away and hissed. What disrespect! Quailpaw thought, he thinks he can do whatever he wants even to a leader!
Mapleflower looked very embarrassed as she watched the kits playing in the sand. As Brightstar passed her, she whispered to the leader, "I'm so sorry."
