As we sat there in the cozy booth, savoring the remnants of our delicious breakfast, time seemed to slip away, lost in the easy flow of conversation between us. The restaurant buzzed with the energy of morning patrons, but in that moment, it felt as though Gabriele and I were cocooned in our own little world.

Lost in the rhythm of our banter, I found myself forgetting about the outside world, the responsibilities waiting for me back at my shop fading into the background. With each passing moment, I became more and more immersed in the warmth of Gabriele's presence, relishing the simple pleasure of his company.

As our conversation meandered from one topic to the next, I couldn't help but marvel at the effortless way in which Gabriele seemed to navigate life. His insights were insightful and thought-provoking, yet delivered with a humility and sincerity that drew me in, leaving me hanging onto his every word.

But amidst the laughter and the shared moments of camaraderie, a subtle tension simmered beneath the surface, a silent acknowledgment of the unspoken feelings that lingered between us.

As the minutes stretched into hours, I became increasingly aware of the passing time, the weight of my responsibilities pressing down on me with each passing moment. But I couldn't bring myself to end this bubble of fantasy that Gabriele and I had made.

"You know, Julie," he began, his voice soft yet filled with a quiet determination. "I've been thinking a lot lately about what I want out of life."

His words caught me off guard, and for a moment, I found myself searching his eyes for any hint of what he might be alluding to. "What do you mean?" I asked, unable to suppress the curiosity that tugged at my heartstrings.

"Lately, I've come to realise that what I truly want is something more meaningful, something... real."

My heart raced in my chest as I listened to him speak, the weight of his words settling over me like a warm blanket. "And what is it that you want?" I asked, my voice barely above a whisper as I held my breath, waiting for his response.

"I-"

As the sound of my phone ringing shattered the fragile bubble of intimacy that had enveloped us, I felt a pang of guilt wash over me like a tidal wave. My heart sank as I glanced down at the caller ID, Caleb's name glaring back at me from the screen. Before me, I could feel Gabriele's gaze burning into me, his expression unreadable as he watched me with a mixture of curiosity and apprehension.

For a moment, I hesitated, torn between the desire to answer Caleb's call and the overwhelming need to stay present in the moment with Gabriele. But as the ringing persisted, growing louder and more insistent with each passing second, I knew that I couldn't ignore it any longer.

With a heavy sigh, I reluctantly reached for my phone, my fingers trembling slightly as I accepted the call. "Hello?" I said, my voice strained with emotion as I braced myself for Caleb's response.

"Hey, Julie," Caleb's voice came through the line, sounding cheerful and upbeat as always. "I was just calling to see if you're free for lunch today. I thought we could grab a bite to eat together before we go out for the weekend. I came over to the shop but Zoe said you hadn't clocked in."

My heart sank at his words, the weight of his invitation hanging heavy in the air between us. Though I knew that I should be grateful for Caleb's thoughtfulness, a part of me couldn't help but feel a twinge of disappointment at the timing of his call.

"I'm actually... I'm actually out right now," I stammered, my voice faltering as I struggled to find the right words. "I'm having breakfast with a friend."

Caleb's response was immediate, his tone laced with surprise. "Oh, really? Who are you with?"

I glanced up at Gabriele, feeling a flush of embarrassment creep onto my cheeks as I met his gaze. "Um, it's... it's just a friend," I replied vaguely, my voice barely above a whisper. "I'll... I'll call you later, okay?"
