Trigger warning- mentions of self harm

Danielle POV

Once Serena was as settled as she could be, I left her to listen to her music again and moved back to my seat beside Stefania.

"Is she okay?" Stefania mouthed quietly as we were only sat a row behind.

I sighed and ran my fingers through my hair. I was so worried about Serena and her home situation and so frustrated with the system in place that was meant to protect her.

"If you ask her she'll tell you she's fine," I whispered.

"But she's not?" Stef confirmed.

"Not at all. How can she be okay when she's got cuts across her wrist that I've just had to dress? Or when she turns up to school covered in bruises? Or when she can barely keep her eyes open in class because she's not eaten or slept?" I ranted, feeling a lump in my throat and eyes filling.

"She won't talk to anyone, she won't even give me a full story," I added.

"She really needs to be monitored regularly by the school pastoral team," Stefania pointed out.

"I've tried to convince her to talk to you," I said.

"It's not fair on you either having all that responsibility," Stefania frowned.

"I don't mind that, at least I know someone is checking in on her," I shrugged.

We were broken from our conversation when one of the boys shouted me from the back of the bus.

"YO MISS, WHEN WE STOPPING FOR A BREAK?" He called out.

"Joel we've been on the bus like 15 minutes," I said sarcastically, turning around in my seat.

"SO DO I GOTS TIME FOR A NAP?" He shouted back.

"You do, sweet dreams," I nodded, turning back around.

"I don't know how you do it in class all day," Stefania smirked.

"These are my favourite class, they're great kids," I smiled.

"But don't get me wrong, some of my other classes are a nightmare," I added.

"Oh I know, have of them have to see me as part of their behaviour plan," she laughed.

"You'd love Serena though, she has the gentlest nature underneath. She really is the sweetest," I said warmly, hoping she'd one day get the courage to work with Stefania.

"I'll try and make some small talk with her today. You know, show her I'm not that scary," Stefania said, looking over in Serena's direction.

"Treat her like a little rabbit, she'll spook easy," I pouted sadly.

We stopped at a service station about 45 minutes later.

"Right guys you have exactly 15 minutes before you need to be back on the bus. Do not make me come find you," I warned before letting all the kids go to the restrooms and buy whatever snacks they wanted.

When they all got off, I noticed Serena hadn't moved.

"Do you not want to stretch your legs sweetheart?" I said, leaning against the seat opposite her.

"I'm good," she smiled shyly.

"Can I check your cuts again then while nobody's here?" I asked, wanting to make sure they'd stopped bleeding and there weren't secretly anymore.

She glanced over in the direction of Stefania as though to say we weren't actually alone.

"It's okay," I said softly.
