Background story:
My name’s Arabella Row and I am a state alchemist. I became a state alchemist at the age of 8. When I was 4 my mother died and then a few months after my father had tried to bring her back to life. He tried to use me as a sacrifice, for equivalent exchange. I didn’t go as planned and instead the gate of Truth only took my right leg and took my father's left leg and right arm. He had gotten automail for the both of us and I had recovered within a couple weeks.
2 years later my younger brother had died of a sickness and I had tried to bring him back using the same alchemy my father had used to try bring back my mother. I had my father chained up in the middle of the transmutation circle next to my younger brother’s remains. My father’s body disappeared except the automail that remained on the floor. I thought it had worked and everything was okay. But then I was in front of the gate of Truth. It opened to allow me to see the truth of the universe once again and the hundreds of different colored eyeballs staring back at me.
My screams erupted from inside me and I opened my eyes once again to the darkness of the room in my house. It hadn’t worked… yet again. I threw up on the floor and in the dimly candle lit room I could just make out that it was red that was splattered on the floor. I had thrown up blood. I looked up at the creature I had made that laid in front of me, I had been so close to actually bringing him back. It was almost completed, but now I was completely alone.
A few months after that event, I had learned that most of my organs had disappeared and I knew that it was from the taboo. I had been using alchemy to keep my body from having a melt down.
When I was 7, the military police showed up at my door. A man named Roy Mustang had offered to take me in and train me in the ways of alchemy. I was alone at the time, so I didn’t have anything where I was living. I told him that I would go with him, but first I had to do something. Everybody went outside and then I faced the house I had grown up in but ended up to be hell. I clapped my hands together and pressed them against the wooden wall of the front of my house, setting the place up in flames.
Mustang’s face was shocked, but I wasn’t quite sure whether I hadn’t used a transmutation circle or that I had just set my home on fire. I was to be Mustang’s responsibility and had to follow his orders.
Over the next year, I lived with Mustang and followed him everywhere. We had both grown very close and he had become somewhat of an older brother to me. On my eighth birthday, I asked Roy if I could become a state alchemist. He told me that I wasn’t ready yet, but I disagreed and argued that we should let the exam decide. Roy only said fine to this because he believed that I would fail.
A few weeks passed and exam day suddenly appeared. I was only slightly nervous, but after seeing the gate of truth twice and training with Roy for a year I was certain that I couldn’t fail. I went through the written portion with ease the first day and then they had to do a physical and alchemy test the next. I went to see Roy after I had finished the written portion of the test.
