Early Childhood:
Immediately after Kurenai and Tamaki were born, Shizue Suoh had Kurenai taken away and placed in the care of another couple. Shizue compensated the couple monthly for taking the child she called ‘a burden’. Kurenai took the last of the couple immediately and had her hair dyed a dark shade of red. The couple, Kusuke and Sakura Hatake, only agreed to take the child for the compensation that they were receiving. They neglected Kurenai which caused her to learn to take care of herself.
Once Kurenai was old enough, her ‘parents’ sent her to school, which Shizue happily compensated them for. A few weeks into the year Kurenai met a blonde haired, purple eyed boy. She became best friends with him and they became inseparable. The first time that Kurenai went over to the boy’s house, his mother looked extremely happy, but terrified all at once. The mother ran to the little girl and hugged her tight beginning to cry. Kurenai stood there in confusion as to why this woman was hugging her and crying. Even after that first encounter at the boy’s house, Kurenai continued to go over there everyday after school in order to escape her home life.
The Sickness:
Kurenai was diagnosed with a terminal illness almost immediately after being born. She had a heart-defect and she was missing some of her other organs as well. Her insides were a mess. The doctors predicted that she would die by age 7. Before then it was constant hospital visits and the monthly check they received from Shizue wasn’t enough to pay for the medical bills. Kurenai and the couple assigned to take care of her started to drown in debt. That’s when the verbal abuse turned into physical abuse.
