Ranpo Edogawa, a prestigious honor student, always in the top of the class gathering respect from his classmates. With his incredible intelligence, he is commended for it by his classmates, and even by the rest of the school. No one dares to oppose him.. except for you.

Now, competition between you two has interested the rest of the students as they would estimate who would score higher for the midterms.

But given Ranpo's intellect, he would often be a pain to the gut to compete against.

"Papers will be handed out now. Parents are expected to sign the papers by tomorrow morning, and—"
You didn't listen to Mr. Fukuzawas lecture about the same procedure that happens after an exam result is out. You plugged your earphones in, and only had one wish.

"Please let me score higher than Ranpo Edogawa."

"100%, as always" Ranpo smirks, empathizing the 'always' in his sentence just to irritate you more. He does this every single time he scores perfect in an exam, of course.

Your eyes drop to the paper on his hand subconsciously, he really did score a 100%.

You frowned, facing away from him to avoid being enraged. "I don't care, I've beaten you too many times to give a damn". This was an obvious bluff to the both of you, as obviously, Ranpo's intelligence is way ahead of yours.

All he did was chuckle. "Oh y/n, we both know that's not true. Look at you and your-" he picks up your exam paper as he sees what you got. "96%? Pathetic.. you'll never beat me." he snickers.

96% is an excellent mark, enough to gather praise and attention from students. Some would be extremely proud of this score, even you were quite proud of it yourself; but it meant nothing when it came to him.

"What great motivation to beat you next time!!" you mention, your tone dripping with sarcasm. He never annoyed you more. He gave you a mocking smirk, his green emerald eyes staring right at you with a look filled with confidence trying to make you feel inferior to him. And he succeeded to do so with ease.

"I know.. I'm incredibly smart and popular, isn't that right?" He goes on and fills his own ego as if he gets paid daily to do so. His ego is even more fulfilled by every student praising his intelligence.

How annoying. There was a visible scowl on your face as he complimented himself more and more.

He is smart, and sadly, has potential. But he's always irritating, with an ego always larger than ever. Or that was what you thought, at least, at that time.

"I can always help you score better, free of charge or so, for the first time." he winks at you, before walking out of the classroom, leaving you alone.

You couldn't stop thinking about what he said, you were on your knees to prove him wrong. Because, if you do, he'll finally see how idiotic he looks, showing off his smartass and all that.

"He did better than you again?" Dazai bursts out laughing, with a sarcastic sly grin on his face. "At this point, you're never going to beat him. Give up!" His tone was filled with sarcasm, nothing he said was meant seriously from his heart. Deep inside, he was actually really fond of you.

Well, he always jokes around. That's just how he was. It isn't Dazai if he isn't playfully ridiculing one another.

"I'll beat him next time, I swear.." You muttered, quietly so that nobody could hear. They would never know how displeased you were when Ranpo would consistently beat you and make a large deal about it.

"Trust me, if you want to beat Ranpo, you'll have to try harder. He gets all the answers under a blink of an eye, as his best friend, he's far more intelligent than any other human being~.."

"I don't care." You stopped him. You absolutely despised hearing someone else get praise, at least more than you do— especially if it was Ranpo.

"It's okay, y/n.. I'm sure you can do better next time~!" The nicest of the bunch, Atsushi, never fails to motivate you to do your best, even though it seems hopeless. Even for stupid reasons— like beating an irritating egoistic classmate, or even for your own mental health, he always engages in helping you stay positive in these situations.

You only gave a small smile to him, even though you appreciated his words.

Ranpo still lived inside your mind rent-free, there was nothing else you wanted from this world, then to prove his confidence wrong.

You knew this wasn't reasonable. You knew it would be better for you, Ranpo, and all your friends that have to deal with your endless ranting about who's better, if you have just given up, and stop competing.

But you couldn't. It's not in your nature to let him have the last word.

And being in second place has always made you feel bothered.
