Kate plucked a couple of plums from the vendor's cart giving them a sniff. She pulled out a few buttons the queen had given her, hoping it would be enough to buy the fruit. The vendor looked a little perturbed over the payment but the puny human had sweet eyes and a rather heart melting smile. He flipped the buttons in his palm for a moment, "Next time I expect something of value." He nodded in the direction she had just come from and he pocketed the buttons.
She took off happily, biting into one of the sweet treats, it was so good and so fresh. The juice from it dribbled down her chin and she wiped it with her wrist when she caught Wayne out of the corner of her eye. He was leaning on a barrel and picking his teeth with a switchblade. "You know your stupid boyfriend cost me a job the other day."
"You're stupid, Wayne." She took another bite of her plum and tried to storm on past him.# He closed the distance and took her by the wrist. "Your boy is a pussy. You belong with someone like me!"
Her eyes started to water as he was now scaring her. Twisting her wrist she tried to break free from him. His grip tightened, drawing pain from her and then out of the corner of her eye she saw Smokey standing by an alley up the street. He nodded towards the alley and ducked inside. Kate immediately straightened up, "You know what, you're right. Sean is a puss. I bet you could kick his ass if you wanted to." She stepped into Wayne's space and planted a kiss on his bottom lip, cringing over the smell of his breath, and disguising it as interest in him. Batting her eyes, she nodded towards the alley. "Why not show me what you got packin?"
He was a little surprised at what a slut she was, as her eyes hung on his for a moment, urging him to follow her. She turned to head up the street when he looked for a moment like he was thinking it over she dashed back and took his hand, "Come on, I got chores to do, don't wanna be late."
The idiot bit and her smile was genuine as she dragged him into the alley. Halfway up the alley she stopped and turned to him pushing him against the wall. Her lovely hazel eyes and flaming pink hair getting him aroused. He swooped in for a kiss when He heard, "Hey asshole." The sound came from above him and he looked up to find Sean plummet off a roof with a stone in his hand.
The stone blocked out the light for all of a second when he felt his face crack under the weight of it. The guy stumbled for a second trying to get his bearings when Sean belted his jaw with the rock, "Thought I was a punk, huh? Kate wants nothin to do with yo ass, yo." Again, he swung the rock up into Wayne's Jaw.
By the third swing, Wayne was defending himself and plowed into Sean sending the both of them to the ground. If Sean was good was one thing it was defending himself against bigger dudes. A few good swings even from the ground and Wayne was scrambling to get off the kid.
Wayne gave Sean a few seconds to make it to his feet before trying to go after him again, this time Smokey clubbed him with a piece of wood. Landing on his knee Sean wound around delivering a healthy kick to the face and sending Wayne out cold. Both Smokey and Sean spit on him as he lay there motionless. Smokey laughed as he followed Sean out of the alley, "I told you Sean wasn't no punk, yo."
The three of them went back to the cottage and celebrated with a bottle of ale that Smokey had bought with his earnings from the beekeeper. The three of them dancing and wrapping and laughing amongst themselves for almost an hour when Genevieve opened the door. They all stopped for a moment not really sure if she was going to be mad over what they had done.
Her face was rather serious, "The guards found Wayne in an alley this afternoon, he was rather a mess from what I heard."
Sean stepped forward taking full responsibility, "It was me. I challenged him and he lost. I was told that was okay, though."
Genie peeled off his hat and scratched his hair with her claws. "It was impressive. He deserved every bit of it. He was taken to the clinic for care, as no one knew why he was left like that. I knew though. I am proud of you." Her voice was soft and sweet.
Sean smiled, "We got's some crappy tasting beer, you want some?" He proudly held up a cup of the concoction.
Genie laughed, "This is ale, I am not fond of it, but I will join you." An hour into their little party the lot of them sat around telling funny stories. Kate was snuggled against Genevieve's chest watching the boys act out their skits.
Smokey pulled out some jerky and broke off a couple of pieces for Kate and Sean, he offered some to the queen and she waived it off. He chuckled and bit into his, "You know it's not bad."
Sean sniffed his, "What is it?"
The queen answered, "Wolf meat. I know humans are not fond of it." She was right Sean handed it back to Smokey without even taking a bite of it. "I am sorry to say, but the winters here are long. The deer and bear hide well when the snow comes. Wolf may be the only meat you see till spring."
Sean leaned back tossing his arm up behind his head, "Might be time for me to become a vegetation."
Smokey laughed, "You dope, its vege-tar-ian."
Sean let out one of his pitchy donkey laughs, and the queen stopped mid swig, almost choking on her drink, "What was that?"
"That's how he laughs. Do it again Sean." Kate giggled as Sean let off another followed by a snort.
"Isn't he funny? I just love it when he does that." This time it drew a laugh from Genie.
She stood and brushed off her skirts, "You did well today Sean. Perhaps I was wrong about you being able to fend for yourself. I do make a suggestion though. You should go on a hunt. You will find most warriors love to hunt and are always happy to bring someone along. If you cannot earn your meat, perhaps you can kill your own. If you get a deer before the snow, I will have my kitchen staff carve it for you. They take a cut for the work, but it will last you through a better part of the winter." Before leaving she turned to Kate, "I wish to take you for weaving lessons tomorrow, do you have any chores?"
"I was going to see if I could find more errands to run. I did so good with that the other day, and it pays well." Kate pulled out a pocket full of buttons and broken arrow tips.
Genie picked up one of the broken tips and huffed over the payment, "You will tell me who paid you this tomorrow, and I will collect a proper settlement for your work. I will send a maid to tend to the cottage, and you will accompany me. If you are to make it here, you will need some skills, and running errands is for cubs. You swear you are not a cub."
"Yes, I'm sorry Ma'am." She looked truly heartbroken over the disappointment in Genie's tone. Genie ran her claws through Kate's pink locks and left for the evening.
