Jake found himself rushing offstage once the encore song had finished and all the final waves and blown kisses were wafted out to the crowd (and one of his favorite picks). He glanced towards the place right in front of the stage where he had spotted the girl from the bar and her brother, but she was already gone. He hadn't been able to stop watching her most of the show, not for the reason you would think he would be distracted by a woman... in fact, Jake hardly ever got distracted by anyone when he played. No, with this girl, he was distracted because it was like she wasn't at a Greta Van Fleet concert at all. Jake couldn't put it into words, but through every song, it was like she was in a different world entirely. He had caught her eye once at the very beginning of the show, but Jake swore she never opened her eyes again through the entire two-hour set. He had never seen anything like it. Jake picked up his pace as he squeezed past crew members in the hall, briefly forgetting why he was rushing at all.
"Jake!" Josh's voice carried from behind him. Ah, yes, he remembered. Jake sucked in a breath and stopped, turning to face his twin, "What the fuck was that?" Josh's face was contorted with anger. Danny and Sam jogged up the hallway laughing, but slowed to a stop behind Josh, their smiles fading.
"What?" Jake kept his voice low. He knew this was coming.
"You know what! You played Black Smoke first... we talked about this before the show!" Josh tossed his arms in the air in disbelief.
"No... you talked about this before the show..." Jake grumbled, turning to continue down the hall.
"I can't believe this." Josh huffed, theatrically throwing his palms up and pacing the opposite direction.
"Woah, hold on... what's going on? Jake!" Sam caught Josh before he could walk past him, and Jake turned around to face them again.
"Don't you know?" Josh raised his eyebrows at Sam, who was struck with confusion. Danny leaned against the wall, his dark eyes darting between all of them.
"I never told them." Jake stated flatly.
"Seriously? I mean, really, Jake... does nothing I say matter?" Josh's eyes widened, his voice cracking slightly from fatigue.
"What about the rest of the band, Josh? Does nothing we say matter? You made that decision on your own without even asking any of us!" Jake motioned to Sam and Danny.
"What is going on!?" Sam asked again, standing between them.
"Josh decided on a setlist change without asking anyone." Jake's lips thinned to a line. Josh's jaw flexed as he clenched it.
"What change?" Sam looked to Josh then, trying to keep everything as calm as it could be.
"I wanted to switch Black Smoke Rising with Highway Tune because the fans seem to have really latched onto Highway Tune, fucking sue me!" Josh flailed his hands about and attempted to clear the rasp out of his tired throat.
