"Jake??" Josh called out as he scuttled down the tight backstage hallway of the little concert venue in Detroit. He was running out of time, the band was supposed to be out on stage in less than twenty minutes, and he had an idea. He fiddled with the gold bangles on his arms as he continued down the hall, unsure of which room Jake was getting ready in, "Jake!?" He called a little louder... still nothing, "Jaaaaake!!?" He screeched.
"What?" A door opened and Jake's head popped out into the hallway, an eyebrow raised at his approaching twin.
"Ah! Good, there you are. We're switching Black Smoke and Highway Tune in the set tonight." Josh grinned. Jake stepped further out of the doorway, hurriedly attempting to roll up the sleeve of his striped button up shirt that was tucked into his black jeans and only buttoned at the very bottom.
"Why?" Jake asked through gritted teeth as he struggled with the sleeve.
"People like Highway Tune better, so I think it should be earlier in the set." Josh moved to roll Jake's sleeve up for him, buttoning it securely just below his elbow and switching to the other arm.
"Okay, but if they like Highway Tune better, why not give them something to look forward to later in the set? Something to anticipate..." Jake held his left arm out as Josh fixed his sleeve.
"I just think it would get the crowd all riled up and high energy more towards the beginning." Josh shrugged. Jake's lips thinned into a straight line. Josh seemed sure, like the decision had already been made, and a strange feeling rose in Jake's chest. The band had been Jake's dream, his idea, but he never felt the need to run the show. Truthfully, he felt that the band belonged to the others just as much as it belonged to him, which is why he didn't like when decisions weren't made collectively.
"Did Sam and Daniel have opinions on it?" Jake shook his arms out to his sides when Josh finished with his sleeves and pivoted to walk back into the dressing room, leaving the door open.
"Well, I haven't told them yet, but I don't think it will mess anything up... we play these songs all the time." Josh walked forward into the doorway and leaned against the frame, watching Jake as he pulled a long silver pendant necklace over his head and checked his reflection.
"Josh..." Jake met his twin's eyes through the mirror, "You can't just decide to change the set without everyone else's input." Jake shook his head, Josh sucked in a frustrated breath.
"It's not a big deal." Josh frowned.
"It kind of is..." Jake countered, moving to a sit in a chair and pull on his boots. Josh rolled his eyes and briefly paused as a crew member appeared at the end of the hall and tapped an imaginary watch on his wrist.
"Just trust me... Highway Tune first, okay?" Josh looked back at Jake expectantly. Jake took a deep breath before finally nodding.
"Fine."
