Kings and Queens

"Spencer?!" I say at the same time Dalia exclaims "Dylan?!"

We look at each other and scan the boys who are dressed up in some very cheap jester costumes. I recognize them from last years Shakespearean party that QQK threw at the end of the semester. We look at each other again and burst out laughing.

The boys clear their throats and with a very serious face simultaneously start reading from the scroll they got out from behind them.

"Hear thee, Hear thee, Queen Dalia and Queen Kay have been formally invited for an evening of wooing brought to you by King Diego and King Derek. Prepare to be as our high majesties said word for word wo freaking oed. To make up for the stupid actions of the Kings as well as the dummie mc dummie jesters you see before you. Please accept this token as a formal apology and let the wooing commence" the boys finish reading and pick up the flowers they had placed beside our front door which we hadn't seen.

"I must admit their old timey voices got better since last semester, have they been practicing?" Dalia says trying to control her laughter but failing.

"I don't know, the voices might have gotten better however the clothes got tighter" I pat Spencer's stomach.

"Hey" he protests "you know it's rock hard don't even play" he winks.

"Stay in character, Spencer!" Dylan snaps, I have to give it to him he's nothing if not committed to the bit.

"Queen Dalia" Dylan offers the flowers to her "on behalf of King the brave and strong Diego, please accompany me this way" he waves extravagantly to his beat up 2005 Toyota Corolla as if it where the most elegant carriage.

"You guys are ridiculous" Dalia says shaking her head and smiling. She follows Dylan and before getting into the car screams "bye Queen Kay" and waves just like princess Diana as she gets in and Dylan closes the door.

"Now Queen Kay, it is your turn to be escorted to meet the mighty and wise King Derek" Spencer says handing me the flowers, a beautiful bouquet of wild peonies in different pink hues. Derek can only get these from my favorite flower shop that's a town over. It's an hour trip there and back, he must have hurried to get them when they left the apartment, my heart swells. I take the flowers and burry my nose in them, closing my eyes enjoying the scent as it fills every part of me, memories flooding in as a good scent tends to do.

The snow had only begun to melt when Derek and I had been going out for two months. He had told me he had something special planned for us, but he didn't tell me anything about what he had planned only that I had to dress warm and comfy.
He picked me up from my dorm and once we got outside and into his car he handed me a blindfold. I had it on for what seemed like forever, almost tripping with every step I took but he was there, sturdy and firm guiding me, making sure I didn't fall. When he finally took it off my eyes took some time to adjust but when they did I realized where we were. The window, the roof, our roof.

There was a blanket laid on the roof with a dozen battery operated tea light candles surrounding it. Derek went out the window first and then helped me. When we sat down he picked up a bouquet of pink wild peonies.

"How did you?" I looked at the flowers stunned. "I haven't been able to find them anywhere around here"

"Firstly Dalia, I wish I had known what your favorite flowers were already but I needed some assistance. I won't need it from now on though it's locked in here" he taps his head smiling shyly. "Secondly, after a few dozen calls I finally tracked a flower shop a town over, around 30 minutes away, that had them"

I lean in and give him a quick kiss on the cheek. It might be freezing but he always feels toasty warm. "Thank you" I whisper, smelling the flowers "this is.. just thank you" even in the dark by the battery operated candle light I can see the tip of his ears get red.
