Chapter 13

  Vulpes turned around.

"Are you here to spy?"

"Well... er... um..." He thought about what he should do to flee out loud without knowing it in his main language and the guard could not understand him.

"So you are a spy? If not, tell me what you said after 'um'."

"I won't but I will tell you, I snuck aboard a ship with people who are spying. However, I am not spying. I just wanted to come along for the trip and see another place. I meant no harm. However, I am assuming I will be executed to show my dad, Caesar, to not send spies."

"Oh, us Hoshidons hate executions but we will do it for survival, especially since you revealed you are our enemy's son. Now put your hand behind your back so I can bind them and take you to the queen."

Vulpes did as instructed and was led to the throne room. He regretted mentioning Caesar.

The guard brought Vulpes and had him go on his knees. "Queen Hinoka, I caught this spy. He revealed that he is the child of our attacker from the past nearly fifteen years ago."

"Gods, his son? Tell me, is your name Vulpes?"

"Y-yes." He timidly replied and was surprised she knew his name.

"It's you!" Hinoka pointed to a guard. "Get Sakura and Saul from the council meeting, tell them it is urgent and to come here!"

"Yes, Your Highness!" The guard rushed off and came back with them.

"W-what was so urgent, Hinoka?" Sakura then looked at Vulpes. "Vulpes? Is that you? Oh, my precious child!" She hugged him.

Saul looked at Vulpes. "He looks like us. Our son has returned. Praise the gods! Oh, how did he get here?"

"I snuck on a ship with spies who went to scout for easy places to capture. Also, this is so overwhelming. You two are my parents?"

Sakura stopped hugging Vulpes. "After all these years, I... we were worried w-we would never see you again. My prayers have been answered."

Saul smiled, "I am at peace knowing our son has returned." He hugged Vulpes.

Vulpes broke up the hug. "Caesar is my father and my mother is unknown. Well now that I met you two, I am resurfacing the doubts I had for a long time if Caesar was my real father."

"Dammit, how can we prove to Vulpes that you two are certainly his parents if your physical appearances aren't enough proof?" Hinoka looked at the throne. "This throne allows anyone who sits on it to regain their true mind and form. Maybe Caesar brought up your biological parents when you were around and had those memories sealed."

Vulpes took a deep breath. "I can't suppress my doubts any longer. I can't pretend any longer I am confident Caesar never lied to me. I cannot fully believe him anymore. I got to trust the truth of what you say about this throne." He sat down on the throne.

There, he regained the memories he had lost. "I remember. I remember Caesar telling politicians he kidnapped me from the princess of Hoshido and the failed general who ended up betraying his country. I remember him trying to recall the names of my parents. I remember him telling them he believed the names were Saul and Sakura. I remember overhearing all of this and him telling people to never tell me for fear of death. I remember being caught listening in several times and being taken to a mage to forget those moments."

Vulpes stood up. "Nothing can be created to create false memories except the words of others. Magic can only make people forget, not create lies." He started crying. "For all these years I could have been with my real parents." He ran and hugged Sakura and Saul. "I want Caesar to pay for his crime."

Saul shed tears of joy. "We love you, son. You were born in the castle dungeon. Caesar kidnapped your mother and wanted to raise you as his own. You were born overseas. I rushed to save you both. I witnessed your birth and tried to get you both to safety. I failed. As I was getting you two out of the castle, I was unable to avoid the soldier who rushed at me from behind and he slashed me which tore my tendons in my dominant sword arm. I could never wield a weapon the same again."

Sakura nodded. "He was so overwhelmed with shame that he tried to end himself but I stopped him and told him to have hope that we would see you again. He tried every day to fight like he used to but his tendons never healed."

"I want justice but first I want to spend family time." Vulpes smiled.
