Groggily I open my eyes and it's just beginning to get light outside. Emma is sleeping softly next to me her chest rises and falls in deep rhythmic waves. Rubbing my eyes I look around the bedroom of the small house. I see a pair of green eyes staring at me from the living room nearly making me jump out of my skin. I get out of bed and move slowly to them. Making each step as quiet as possible I don't want to scare it away. Reaching the living room I see the eyes more clearly as they are perched on the armrest of the chair in front of me. It's the first animal that i have seen since we have been here apart from the birds. It's a cat. It has silky black fur with friendly eyes. I move slowly towards it not wanting to startle him. I don't know if it's a him or a her but I'm just going to say it's a boy until I know otherwise. It stands on and arches his back but doesn't run away. I slowly pet its back and it lets me. His fur is soft on my skin. He begins purring and dancing in a circle shoving his head into my hand. I pick him up and he is heavy in my arms. He is a chunky. I have never seen a cat before but this one is friendly. There are some blue feathers on the seat of the chair telling me that he brought his last meal in here to enjoy. I wonder where he has been hiding? I haven't seen him around this town. He clearly eats well he is quite healthy. I set him back onto the chair. He stretches his back putting his butt in the air until he settles back into the chair where I found him.
I head back to the room and shake Emma awake carefully. She opens her eyes slowly "What's wrong?" She asks in a groggy voice. "I want to show you what I found." A smile plastered across my face. Emma raises an eyebrow at me curiously and drags herself out of bed. "Be slow okay?" I motion her to the living room and she walks apprehensively. We reach the living room "What is that?" She asks curiously. "It's a cat! He was in here when I woke up. I don't know where he came from but he is very friendly." I exclaim with excitement. Emma reaches for the cat, afraid. The cat stands to great her and rubs his head against Emma's outstretched hand beginning to purr. A wide toothy grin spreads across her face. "He is so soft I have never seen a cat before." She picks him up with a huff. "Wow he is heavy." She giggles. I laugh with her "He must be eating the birds." I say pointing to the feathers I seen on the chair. Emma face grows into a grimace but she continues to hold the cat. "I hope he sticks around." She says holding him against her. I check to see the gender while Emma holds it and it's definitely a boy cat. "Can we name him?" Emma questions. "Sure, but don't get too attached I don't know if he will stay near by." I answer. Emma's face is solemn I can tell she is sad because she wants him to stay around and hopefully he will. "What are you thinking for a name?" I ask distracting her from her thoughts. Her lips turn up into a smile "Hmm... I'm not sure I have never had to name a cat. What do you think?" I put my finger to my and think for a few minutes "How about something simple like Whiskers?" I answer gesturing to the cat's long white whiskers next to his black nose. "I love that name!" Emma exclaims clapping her hands together. She gets down on her knees kneeling in front of the cat. "Can we name you Whiskers? Do you like that name?" She asks the cat. He gives her a loud "Meow" in agreement like he understands and that makes Emma belly laugh.
