The absence of the primary school trips left an ache in my heart I didn't know I was missing. I missed not having to cover my classes on Wednesdays in favour of helping Chiro out. It was a break from all the teenagers and their strange distaste for the past.
Then there was the ghost known as Spirit who wore the shell of my sister, who didn't get to grow old due to the irresponsible decision to shove her in the water and walked away.
The incident with Simon may have set me back from going to see Royse, but there was no reason I couldn't do it this weekend. I was free of the town trips.
When I went over, I wanted to discuss with Miss Rigg about potentially transferring her under my care. She was abandoned there, and then orphaned.
Someone in her family should take care of her, and since I would be the only one to know of and care about her. I should, right?
I could do it. I've had kids and looked after other peoples. It's my sister, I knew her, and I might even be able to rejig her memory. She recognised me despite my complete style change. That had to means something.
There was the problem of bringing her here. How would that work? The school was by no means a normal one. Most children here were of the age of attendance. There had been the rare exception, but those were in the beginning days (and a weird period in the 1850's when a single father left his child with me during his classes).
Did the school have any policies or regulations regarding visitors? Bringing someone to the school without prior approval may not be allowed or may require a formal process. That's if she was considered a guest. Staying here would have to remove her from that criterion.
I'd have to get the approval of Harro (and possibly Mayor) to have her stay here. The main problem was how my sister's presence may impact my job and responsibilities as a teacher. Will I be able to balance my personal and professional life effectively?
They wouldn't allow her if she negatively impacted my career.
That's even if she desires to be here. I don't wish to coerce her into moving away from her life because of my guilt about an event a millennium ago.
But if she wished it, and there was a balance that could be reached, then I should try.
If I approached the headmaster and explained my situation and may consider my request and provide guidance on the appropriate process to follow.
My friendship with Harro was a complex one. He took over the school after me. At the time he was a shining example of what the future could hold. Great grades, social intelligence, and a passion for the future of the school that rivalled my own. He and his siblings were all working here for a time and were all good candidates to take over. The school at the time was ungoverned, so I had to go to no one to pass the title. In some ways, it was a better time. His interest in the job was what stuck out. He cared about the past, the students, and the sacredness of the land.
He was one of the few people who knew the history and saw through the stories I'd tell the younger years during the occasional story time in the old library.
He shadowed me, worked with the deputy, and then eventually took over the role when I left. This school was his family, and he would kill anyone who messed with it.
If humans tried, then the island may over look the recently instated Murder Act (an act we stole and adapted from the British.)
Despite our age difference, we had always had a relaxed, friendly relationship. We used to dine together in the hall or in the courtyard on the few times we covered the duty or had to speak to a student. We often chatted about our families, work, and their mutual love of the tavern in town.
