Stephen was practically running out of his office once his shift ended Friday evening. He didn't know why, but there was a certain excitement bubbling up inside of him at the thought of seeing (Y/n). And just as he finished getting changed out of his scrubs, he picked up the little sticky note that had been stuck to his computer screen for the past few days.

'Cafeteria, 5:30 :)'

He'd recognise (Y/n)'s handwriting anywhere.

And he found himself looking to this little square piece of yellow paper whenever he felt his day get a little too stressful. And that stupid little smiley was enough to pick him back up.

So, Stephen paused, just before reaching the hospital cafeteria, to catch his breath, straighten down his shirt, and check his watch.

5:29

'On time.'

He smirked down at his wrist, pleased he wasn't late, or too early; He didn't want to look too eager.

So, he turned the corner and stopped in the doorway, before he frowned in confusion.

The cafeteria was empty. Not a single person in sight.

And he double checked his watch again, making sure he did indeed read the right time. And he fished through his trousers pocket, finding the little note and saw that, yes, they were to meet this Friday, today, at 5:30pm, in the cafeteria.

And Stephen was about to turn around to go find her, when he saw out of the corner of his eye, someone standing on the balcony outside.

So, Stephen made his way over, finding a spot against the railing next to her as they both peered across the city, watching the sun start to set behind the skyscrapers.

"I don't know why," (Y/n) started, not turning to look over at him as she spoke, "but I'm surprised you're on time."

Stephen chuckled, before turning to his side to see her smiling back at her own statement.

"I'm not incapable of simple tasks without you."

"How about 'useless' ones?"

Stephen rolled his eyes upon hearing her words before feeling her playfully nudge his side, the sweet sound of giggling escaping her lips as she did so.

And he sighed, feeling an odd sense of comfort as the evening breeze brushed against their skin, leaving a slight blush against both their faces.

"I'm sorry."

His mouth moved before he had time to register what he was saying, and (Y/n) turned to see his eyes follow the clouds as they moved through the sky, the orange sunlight illuminating their horizon. And she couldn't help but do a double-take.

D-did he just... apologise?

"I-"

"Don't make me say it again."

He stood looking from the corner of his eyes at her, his head still facing straight ahead before they both let out a small laugh.

"Thank you."

Stephen found her hand reaching for his on the railing, the warmth of her palm being quite welcomed as the evening chill started to settle in the air. And his head turned, seeing her reach onto her pocket and pull out a small bundle of folded papers clipped together.

In regards to (Y/n)'s referral...

Was all he needed to read to know what this was.

And he blushed slightly, feeling his cheeks warm up, knowing she had read through his email that they printed out for the meeting.
