"Are you comfortable?" The reaper cocked his head to examine my new attire. It wasn't anywhere near as fancy as my expensive dresses, or even a dress at all, but it was rather warm.
I nodded shortly his way before looking forward once again,
"I can't recall the last time I didn't wear a dress. I don't suppose it was intentional?"
He chuckled, not looking my way suddenly,
"Oh is that what you think? Maybe simple men's clothes were all I had in your size."
What an obvious lie, he clearly offered me men's clothes on purpose. As much as I could pretend to be annoyed, I wasn't all that bothered.
I already left behind my life as a noblewoman and lived with someone who would normally be an outcast to society, trying out other fashion styles wasn't the end of the world, now was it?
Hm... Normally an outcast, but he wasn't, was he? Despite everything, he had a positive reputation in the city.
The subject of my thoughts changed as I gave The Undertaker a curious stare as we walked,
"If it's not too much trouble, you're... Immortal, aren't you? How old are you, exactly?"
The silver man twitched as he flicked his attention back on me.
For a long minute, he was quiet as he considered his answer, then finally shrugged with a musical hum,
"Well I don't know actually~ I left the association... Oh about a hundred years ago. When you've been around so long, time tends to blend together, you know!" He moved so lively and animated as he teased his response, as though it were all a big show in his eyes.
Amazing... I couldn't even consider being alive that long. What was existence like for someone who couldn't die? Forgetting your own age sounds like the first thing that would happen when time becomes pointless to track.
"So... What was it like growing up then? You were a kid, weren't you?"
Imagining The Undertaker was a child sounded cute. Did he have such long hair when he was small as well? Did he love jokes too?
Yet the reaper grinned, taking me out of my thoughts,
"Oh, I wasn't always a reaper, my dear. I was a human just like you once upon a time."
What?!
"No way-! But then how-"
Was I prying into something I shouldn't?
His smile faded to a short frown and the man sped up to walk in front of me. His boots tapped against the sidewalk quickly as he walked. Woah, sore spot?
The Undertaker's silver locks swayed as he moved, but to my surprise, he continued talking without looking back,
"Before being a Reaper... Hm... It's quite foggy like a dream you can barely remember~ It's a punishment for destroying your own life, you see? Any human that intentionally makes their own heart stop." The mortician raised a fist and held it against his chest to mimic a heart as he spoke, "They need to pay their life forward and be a reaper until their sentence is complete and move on into the afterlife. They called me the Silver Fox."
Suddenly turning back to face me, The Undertaker's face was wide with a grin,
"But I left! I'm retired, no more reaper work for me... Legally," He clearly referred to the girl he stole the soul of for me, but I didn't need it to be dumbed down to get that. Instead, I didn't interrupt, allowing him to tell me more. I was thinking of even more questions to ask later, because this was... So much.
Reapers were born when a human murdered themselves, that was... Tragic. They couldn't even move on because they had to atone for it, I couldn't imagine such an existence!
"So does that mean you don't, uh, remember your human life?" I opted to ask when I figured he was done speaking.
The Undertaker looked at me quizzically before turning forward once again,
"Hmm~ I do in pieces. It was such a long time ago. Most Reapers can't recall such a thing clearly. It doesn't particularly feel like my own memories when I think back to it. But I was a holy man I'm quite sure."
A priest? Well that made sense, he certainly dressed the part even after death.
The Undertaker was such a lighthearted guy though, what would have caused his human counterpart to...?
No, I couldn't ask that one. Asking why someone would do that to themselves was much too far, even if it was a long time ago.
I picked up my pace to walk beside him and look upon the reaper's face. I never thought too deeply of it before, but his porcelain skin was marked with thick scars, were those connected to his human life as well? Did they carry on beyond existence?
Noticing my staring, The Undertaker offered a smile my way,
"Don't fret, I'll tell you more some other time, (Y/N)~ We're nearly there."
He was right, I didn't even notice we turned down the road. How disappointing, I was really starting to get invested in the talk. What a way to drop something interesting and leave it on a cliffhanger.
Coming close was the church I had been to that night one week ago. When the sun was out, it didn't feel so isolated and uninviting. I had asked to come here first, so I should've felt relieved, but I just felt...
What was this feeling?
Nervous, unnerved, maybe scared? It was difficult to truly say, I knew every bone in my body wanted me to turn around, but I couldn't.
Seemingly catching onto my hesitance, The Undertaker brushed along my side with his dark fabric robes to ground my attention back to Earth,
"Distracted today~ Sovereign for your thoughts."
Christ, where do begin?
So much had happened recently, one night of proper sleep wasn't enough to properly sort my thoughts. As much as I wanted to talk, I had to admit defeat and shake my head,
"I'd tell you if I knew myself. Everything simply feels wrong."
Despite my reluctance, The Undertaker's smile didn't falter,
"Ah~ You know how to attract curiosity, my canary. Such a tease, but as you wish. When you're done, I'll bring you to that place I was speaking about."
Was he talking about his favorite place? I was quite curious I must confess. I had wanted to visit the church before anything else to sort myself after yesterday, if only to keep my own sanity. Wait, did he say 'my'? Not 'little' anymore?
