For a brief moment, my alibi husband and I froze and gasped in horror. But then we immediately relaxed again when we saw a man we didn't know, who wordlessly pushed past us both and disappeared into one of the free cabins.
"It's a good thing that just went well again..." I murmured quietly, more to myself than to Ryan, realizing how excitedly my heart was still pounding in my chest.
In future, we should be more careful about how we could best handle our private arguments and conversations in public...
What would Simone and Martin have done if Sarah and John had accidentally found out about our secret? Would they have erased our neighbors' memories first, Harry Potter-style, or would Ryan and I have had to change our location immediately?
To be honest, it would have been a little difficult for me to leave everything behind again after just a few weeks, as I had already had to do in San Francisco with my Italian nonna... Because I kind of liked this small, cute little house too... even this stuffy small-town life didn't get on my nerves quite as much after a while as it did at the beginning of our mission...
"Come on... Lucas... we should go back slowly...", my fake husband then said in an equally quiet whisper and I looked at him slightly indignantly: "Do you really want to leave the previous one uncommented, Ryan?"
"Our previous personal lives shouldn't play a role in our mission, Lucas..." the ex-Navy Seal replied with a serious look, and he seemed so determined that I sighed again.
"All right... but we should really go back now...", I said again and added with a small, sardonic grin, "Not that Sarah would think that we had done a little number in the toilet between the movie..."
"Lucas!" my fake husband then mumbled, slightly embarrassed, into his three-day beard, while I just grinned all over my face.
"Well, come on then..." was my response and I hesitantly held out my left hand to the muscular man. As I glanced into his light blue eyes, I whispered slightly uncertainly: "Is that all right with you, Ryan?"
The tall ex-soldier seemed to struggle with himself for a moment before he finally agreed with a sigh and reached for my hand.
"Then back into the fray, Commander..." I murmured slyly and I noticed from close up how the corners of Ryan's mouth twitched slightly against his will at this sentence.
***
A few days after Martin and Simone had given us a good headache and reminded us that Takashi Yamamoto was still looking for me, Ryan and I had patched things up a bit.
We'd even been sleeping in the same bed since the beginning of last week to keep up appearances. Because last Tuesday, John had knocked frantically on our front door early in the morning, waking us both from our sleep.
He had excitedly told us that his car wouldn't start and had asked Ryan to either jump-start it or give him a ride in our car so he wouldn't be late for work. And, of course, John hadn't missed the bedding on the sofa in the living room and so he had jokingly asked my fake husband: "Oh God, buddy... are things already so bad that you have to spend the night in the living room permanently?"
"What's it going to be like once you've been married for more than two years?"
And after this embarrassing experience, Ryan had finally managed to bring himself to share the bed with me in order to avoid such an awkward situation with our neighbors.
And so it was when we woke up that morning next to each other in the large king-size bed. Nevertheless, the muscular ex-Navy Seal had insisted that we each used two single comforters and during the night he rigidly insisted that we each stayed on our respective sides of the bed.
