The sound of the birds chirping could be heard. The rays of the sun coming through the window fell directly on my face, waking me up from my sleep. It was a cosy morning, I stretched my body a bit and finally opened my eyes.
It was rare for me to have such a deep sleep but I was thankful for it. I sat up on the bed and took a deep breath, flinching just after that as my alarm rang. Picking up my phone from the nightstand, I put off the alarm and let out a sigh.
I sat with my eyes closed, listening to the chirping of the birds which I found calming. After a few minutes, I finally got off the bed and walked to the washroom to get ready for the day.
A while later, I came out with a towel wrapped around my body and another one carrying my wet hair. I then walked towards my wardrobe and took out my outfit for the day which was a proper formal suit of grey colour.
Being a CEO of a company, I couldn't wear any informal clothes while at work. I went to my dressing table and opened a drawer, taking out the hair dryer to dry my hair. Plugging it in, I started to dry my hair.
Once I was done, I started to wear my clothes but as always, my eyes landed on the scars on my body. I hated them. I hated myself for not being able to fight back when he was hitting me. As much as I wanted to take revenge, I calmed myself down and wore my clothes.
Going to the nightstand, I picked up my pack of cigarettes and went to the balcony. Lighting up a cigarette, I took a puff and closed my eyes, leaning on the railing. This has become a part of my morning routine.
The ringing of my phone caught my attention. I walked back in the room and picked up the call, seeing Jennifer's name flashing on the screen. Jennifer was the head of the HR department in my company. "Good morning, sorry for calling this early.." "No, that's fine, I was about to leave for office anyway. What's up?" I responded, wearing my footwear and picking up the car keys.
"Had to tell you that Sam has resigned from his job so we gotta find a new assistant for you." Sam, my personal assistant for the past 5 years. I knew he would leave the job when he mentioned that his mother had a paralysis attack and he wants to take her to Germany to get the best doctors.
"Then do it. Recruit people and take interviews." I replied to Jen and knew that she must have rolled her eyes at this reply. "I know the procedure to hire people, Evelyn. I just thought I would tell you about it." I hummed at her response and put on my airpods as I started driving.
"I know it already, don't worry about that." I spoke as I drove. "Alright then, I'll find you a new assistant as soon as possible and well, gonna hang up now. I'll see you soon." Jennifer then hung up while I removed my airpods and continued driving.
Around 20 minutes later, I reached the office. I got off my Porsche, getting the usual stares from people around but never bothered about it. Locking the car, I kept the keys in my pocket and walked inside the building.
On the way to my cabin, multiple people greeted me to which I politely greeted back. I reached my cabin and took a seat on my chair. Just then Jennifer walked in.
"I would appreciate it if you knock before entering." I said to her but got a 'do you think I give a fuck?' look in return. Letting out a sigh in defeat, I motioned her to speak.
"We already have a few candidates for the interview. Would you like to take them or should I do it?" I shook my head at her question. "I can't, I have back to back meetings. My day is packed so it's better if you do it." She nodded at my response.
"Fine, I will take the interviews and shortlist at least three candidates, then you can choose the one you prefer." I mumbled an 'okay'and gave her a nod before she went out. As she left, I switched on my laptop and started to work.
The day passed in a blink of an eye. After I had my last meeting, I drove back to my house. As soon as I walked in, I plopped myself on the couch, feeling exhausted. I then closed my eyes and rested my head on the headrest of the couch, relaxing for a moment.
"Did you do this to him?" I quickly shook my head at his question. "She's lying dad, she was the one who hit me." My eyes widened when I heard my brother say this. "I didn't hit him! He's lying!" I yelled, defending myself but got a slap from my father in return.
My face turned to another side and I was sure that his hand had left a mark on my cheek. "How dare you hit my son, huh?" He spoke, holding both my shoulders and shaking my body while I kept defending myself. "I didn't hit him, Dad-" "Don't you call me Dad. You are not my child, got it?" He said as he held my jaw tightly. I sniffled, letting tears escape my eyes but just nodded my head.
I gasped as I opened my eyes. My forehead was covered with sweat while my breathing was uneven. I licked my dry lips and ran my hands through my hair before standing up and going to the kitchen.
I took out a can of beer and clicked it open, taking a big sip. This was how my life was. It was pretty messed up and I knew about it.
After I sipped on my beer, I squeezed the can and threw it in the bin. Walking to the bedroom, I took out my night suit and went to take a shower. As usual, when I was wearing my clothes, my eyes scanned all the scars of my body.
I looked away from them and wore my clothes, going to my bed and finally lying down on it. Closing my eyes, I tried to fall asleep after an exhausting day.
