Opening Sequence,
A fox is shown in the forest.Flashback: In Oz, Zelena mourns the death of her husband, Dorothy Gale's father, although she herself is responsible for his death. Dorothy and lady Zelena seemingly comfort each other over the loss. Lady Zelena consults her magic crystal ball to ask how she can kill Dorothy, who is beloved by the people but a threat to her bid for the throne. She says that the king's knights will not kill his daughter, and the crystal ball tells her that she needs a pirate. The former pirate, Black Beard, and his sidekick fox seem to enjoy living a peaceful life in the woods near the docks. The pirate kills only for himself to live, and he is allergic to rum, he ran away like a coward from his Captain, Hook. As Black Beard and his fox enter a tavern, the other pirates begin harassing him, prompting him to successfully defend himself. His performance is viewed in the crystal ball by the Wicked Witch, who is greatly impressed. She summons the pirate to offer him anything he wants on the condition that he brings her Dorothy's heart. He agrees to this deal, in return asking for the protection of all the foxes in Oz. Than Dorothy and Black Beard walk together in the forest, and she sees through his disguise and correctly guesses that he was sent by the witch to kill her. Dorothy flees, but as black Beard catches up with her, he finds her writing a letter, which she requests he deliver to the witch after she is killed. Black Beard takes out his sword, but instead of killing her, he fashions a whistle out of a bamboo stick, telling her that it will summon help and then telling her to run. Black Beard then returns to kingdom Kansas with a flying monkey's heart, hoping that she will not know the difference. The witch asks him to read her the letter, which is an apology for past wrongs as well as a request from Dorothy that her stepmother rule the kingdom with compassion. The witch burns the letter and takes the box with the heart in it to store in her vault. When she cannot open one of her storage safes, it proves that the pirate lied to her; the heart is not human. The Witch has her flying monkeys drag him down to the vault and she yanks his glowing heart out of his chest. She tells Black Beard that from now on he will be her pet and will do her bidding forever, and if he ever betrays her, all she has to do is squeeze. End of Flashback
Present day Storybrooke, In Roni's Diner, Sheriff Darkbloom throws darts at a picture of a monkey very accurately. Renee Gale arrives but leaves immediately because she has not forgiven him for hiding his relationship with Zelena. Renee attempts to avoid conversation, but Darkbloom is insistent on explaining to her he feels nothing for Zelena. He kisses Renee and suddenly sees a vision of a fox, only to have Renee push him away. Frustrated by Renee's lack of understanding, Darkbloom later sleeps with Zelena. During the night, he awakens abruptly from a dream of a flying monkey and a fox. When Darkbloom tells Zelena that the dream felt like a memory, Zelena tries to convince him to stay, but Darkbloom leaves. As Darkbloom attempts to get to his car, the fox from his visions appears next to him, startling him before it leaves. As he tries to find the fox in the woods, he runs into Dr.Rogers, Darkbloom tells him about the fox, and Dr.Rogers suggests to him that dreams are memories from another life. The following morning, Renee discovers flowers on the table and throws them out, assuming they are from Darkbloom, but Hope says that they were hers from Dr.Rogers, with whom she had a one-night stand. Renee is glad to hear that Hope appears to be getting over Elias. Hope tells Renee that it is obvious that she has feelings for Darkbloom, but does not acknowledge them because she is putting up a "wall" to keep herself from getting hurt. The sheriff finds the fox in the woods, and when he whistles, the fox goes to him. As he pets the fox's head, he sees himself holding a gun, about to hurt the woman he only knows as Hope Ash. Darkbloom pays a visit to her classroom, telling her that he believes they know each other from another life, before Storybrooke. Hope assumes that the sheriff has been talking to Grace, and while this is not the case, this gives Darkbloom the idea to consult Grace about her book.
Meanwhile, at the sheriff's office, Zelena shows up and warns Renee to stay away from Darkbloom, as Darkbloom visits Grace and describes his visions, to which Grace replies that he must be the pirate Black Beard. Black Beard was hired by the Wicked Witch to remove Dorothy's heart and bring it back to her, but when he does not do so, she removes his heart. Darkbloom later attempts to explain to Renee that he could not feel anything with Zelena because he does not have a heart. Darkbloom and Renee then encounter the fox from Darkbloom's visions, and follow it to a graveyard and vault marked with a symbol Darkbloom saw in his visions and in Grace's book. Looking for his heart, Darkbloom fervently searches the vault, which turns out to be the tomb of Grayson Moss. Zelena arrives to place flowers on her husband's grave and is furious to find them there.
Zelena accuses Renee of stealing the sheriff from her, and Renee responds that Zelena has chased everyone away. Darkbloom defends Renee, and the women exchange blows. Later, while Darkbloom cleans Renee's wounds, Zelena pushes aside the stone inside the vault, which turns out not to be a tomb after all; the stone reveals a staircase. Renee realizes her feelings for Darkbloom and the two kiss just as Zelena opens a storage box in the hidden room and clutches Darkbloom's heart, crushing it to dust, showing that she remembers being the Wicked Witch. Before he collapses and dies, Black Beard last words to Renee are "I remember everything! Thank you."
