I, Esther Johnson, have never been so humiliated in my life. The thing is, I can't figure out a good way to get back at Francine, and it needs to be really good.
Sitting in the school library with my pack of Doritos, I sank my nose in a good book, not wanting any disturbance, just me, myself and I.
" Excuse me, young lady."
Looking up, Ms. Fletcher looked down on me. Although she was simply the librarian, she carried herself as if she was the principal, always perfect, always enforcing the rules, which grinds the students' nerves.
"Yeah?"
"What was that, did you just answer me 'yeah?'. No, no, no, young lady. You ought to respect those set above you. You young children these days think it reflects on you positively when you disrespect teachers. Do you do this to look 'cool' or to 'fit in with the crowd'? Remember this, what you do today, affects you tomorrow."
"Yes miss, my apologies."
She walked around, looking at the book I was reading, unimpressed, she stood up straight, enforcing the rules as usual.
" You should be at the school leaving function, it is compulsory. "
Rolling my eyes, I quickly stood up, finding my way to the auditorium.
When entering it was pretty impressive the way they managed to set up a beach theme for the function. There were tall inflatable Palm trees and even a sand box.
"Okay, I guess I can enjoy myself. C'mon Esther, try not to be so anti-social, just forget what happened a few hours ago."
"Hm, talking to yourself, one of the signs of insanity."
Looking to my left, Francine and her wannabes casually passed by, trying their best to be the superior, not that I care. Standing still to the music, I watched girls and guys step out into the middle of the dance floor to enjoy themselves, too bad for not being anti-social. Imagine, I could have been munching on food and reading a good book right now! That's why I don't understand teachers, if you are caught texting in class, you are told to stop and pay attention to the lesson. I was reading a book, trying to enhance my intelligence, but I am stopped, by a teacher, to go and party. What sense does that make?
As the music continued to blast from the oversized speakers, it was suddenly interrupted by Principal Flannigan.
" Why hello students, I hope you are enjoying this wonderful function that the staff members have planned. Before I let you continue, I must lay down some ground rules-"
A loud uproar came from the crowd. Mr. Flannigan raised his hand for silence.
"Now that the place is quiet, I may begin. No bumping, no grinding, no 'hooking up' and no other form of 'dirty' actions! Thank you."
The music turned back on and everyone blatantly disobeyed everything that was said, and then they wonder why the school is going downhill.
Is it my fault I can't understand the purpose of these little get-togethers? All you are doing is leaving for two and a half months to come back again in the Fall, it makes no sense why people make such a big deal of the summer holiday, and I just think the reason why I don't understand is because I have to stay home for exactly 2months, 10 days, 16 hours, 45minutes and 22 seconds with my psychotic mother and drunk father. Yes, that's how sad my life is. There is nothing in this world that would make me love this Summer.
*********
" Five!"
Five more seconds until Summer Break.
