AKIA
I'm sliding on a jersey from Liz's closet when her phone dings with a text.
"You have a text message!" I yell loud enough for her to hear through the closed bathroom door.
She creaks open the door a little bit to peak in. "What does it say? Can you just reply to it?" Liz says as she disappears back into the bathroom.
I look down at the phone and see it's from "Big Bro," asking if Lizzie is at the game already. Apparently, Liz's older brother just got into our school's basketball academy. Today is the introduction to our town's new team. We get to see the players and how they play.
She invited me to come, so I am— to support my best friend and for the experience. I don't know much about basketball, especially our town's official team. I couldn't name 5 players if you asked me to. I type back a quick response that says, "I'll be there soon" and look over my outfit in the long, body framed mirror. This will be fun.
When we arrive at the game, we go find our seats. The commentator reveals the names of the starting players. When Austin Chanler is called out, Liz cheers so loud, my ears could pop. She's such a good sister. I love her.
I try to squint my eyes and see what Austin looks like and if he resembles Liz, but the jumbotron doesn't follow him as he quickly walks past and I only get the smallest glimpse of him. Brown hair.
We sit and watch the game up until the middle of the 2nd quarter. I peak at Liz but she's too distracted, looking at something or someone on the benches. I follow her line of sight, where I see a man with muscle molding his back, pearly white teeth, #17 plastered on his jersey and a perfect, masculine face. He's staring directly at Liz and she's staring right back at him. I feel straight up uncomfortable, like I'm interrupting something.
I nudge Liz's shoulder and ask, "do you know him?"
She quickly turns to me, a light pink flush coating her cheeks; something you wouldn't see unless you're close.
"No! I was watching the game, but felt like someone was looking at me so I looked down and; there he is. He's gorgeous, isn't he?" She sends me a quick smile and then turns back to admiring him.
2nd quarter is done now and everyone leaves to get food during halftime. I let Liz know that I'm going to get food and hurry out.
