AKIA

Tousled in the bed, I let out a long groan as I stretch my legs, my hands falling over my face; rubbing my groggy eyes. An overly excited squeal and a creak of the bed have my hands falling by my side, my eyes exposed.

"Aren't you excited?" Liz smiles, shaking me by the tops of my shoulders. To my luck, any injuries I have from my mom are more below— starting only from my upper arms.

It's August 16th. The first day of school.

I reach my hand out for my phone, tapping the screen and hovering over it.

"It's 05:00, Liz!" My tired eyes watch her.

"My mom leaves at 07:30! We need to see her off." Liz adds.

"You mean, she will see us off?" I correct.

Liz falls into the mattress, her back hitting the soft cushioning. Remembering how excited Liz was for school, I smile cheekily.

"What?" Liz looks at me, lifting her head and pulling herself back up by her elbows.

"You're only excited because you know Hayden will be at school!" I smile even bigger.

Her mouth falls open, but when no sound comes out, she resorts to grabbing the pillow beside my head to knock me with it.

"Okay, okay! I'm sorry!" I giggle, pushing the pillow away the numerous times it attempts to come down on me. Any sleepiness I had is knocked out of me.

"Did you already shower?" I ask, changing the subject as I push my curls up my head, adding volume to the knotty mess.

"Um, no." Liz distractedly answers.

I make a run for the bathroom door, locking myself inside. I hear Liz's quick footsteps and then she's banging the door.

"You better hurry up, Akia Rainsong. You take forever!" She says from the other side of the door, grumpily.

"Good thing my best friend, Lizzie Moore, woke me up hours early!" I speak against the door, mocking the use of her full name.

"Good point." Liz replies.

"When do I not have a good point?" I remark.

"Never." She sighs.

"Exactly."

"Take care of yourselves. Don't forget to eat and drink. Pay attention to your studies." Mrs. Moore orders. "And if you have any boyfriends," she narrows her eyes at Liz, "I'll allow it. Just make sure you have balance." She hugs us tight.

"Okay, mom." Liz agrees, in a hurry.

Mrs. Moore pulls out her pointer finger, just inches away from Liz's nose.
