AKIA

It feels like an ongoing cycle of having to get up each morning and go to lectures. If I could risk skipping class, I would. Now that summer break is over and I'm back to school, I feel free. Since I was little, I've been a smart kid— indulging myself in my studies even if I'd come home to a woman who was never proud of me. My entire life, I've just watched my mom corrupt herself. In the beginning, she wasn't as bad. She'd skip her medication and go ballistic in her own mind, which resulted to her seeing me off to Ms. Rainsong. I'm happy she got a job, where she can feel like she's not the person she's truly become. The only downside is my work is paid for that. I can't ditch school or miss the deadline for tuition because I'd be sent to the dean— where my mom works. I try to avoid trouble at all costs. I can't end up there. I can't face her again.

"Gosh, I don't remember the last time I've been to a fair! Are you excited?" Liz breaks me out of my scary thoughts, dragging a pair of jeans on herself. She's always in a good mood and I don't know how she does it. I actually am excited. I've been feeling so suffocated on these school premises— W.U and then Wayarke Academy. I think it'll be refreshing to finally set things behind me and get back to them later. The only drawback is that Austin is going too. I've been getting used to his presence, but that doesn't mean it doesn't annoy me. These past few school days, I've been ignoring him the best I could. Still, it feels like I'm always being roped into hanging out with him even more. I knew it was inevitable. He's my best friend's brother— of course, he's tagging along. Liz grabs her phone off the dresser, scrolling and clicking things until a swoosh transfers from her phone to mine. Pulling it out of my back pocket, I check to see that she added me to a group chat—one that consists of Austin, Hayden, Dean and her. And now me.

~Liz added ~you

(***)*****25: Who's number did you add?

(***)*****81: *Whose

(***)*****25: Is there ever a time you don't annoy me, Hay?

(***)*****81: No.

(***)*****25: K.

I resist the urge to roll my eyes at how stupid their encounter is. It's so obvious who is who as I change their contact names. I start to type back a reply, but Liz beats me to it.

Liz: It's Akia's number!

Hayden: Morning, baby!

Misogynist Asshole: Shut the fuck up, Hay.

Hayden: Stop calling me that.

Misogynist Asshole: No thanks.

Hayden: Then, I'll keep calling your sister baby.
