"It was only to quiet her," Kiernan said coolly.
Kane didn't care about this conversation in the slightest. He was invested in placating his stomach, which had grown ravenous since he'd awoken. He had no idea what the bean, tomato, spice concoction was, but it tasted terrific in his hunger.
His eyes flicked to the other side of the table, where Gianna sat, smiling fondly at Kiernan. He had no idea why this woman wasn't jumping out of her seat to clobber the guy. All Kiernan had done for the last thirty minutes was explain that their marriage was a sham.
Reid looked confused. "Let me get this straight..." For someone who watched soap operas, he should be bouncing in his seat, excited at the weirdness. But he'd sat quietly listening to Kiernan stumbling over his words until now. "You married Gianna because...she kept bothering you...to marry her?"
Kiernan sighed with exasperation. "Yes." He didn't react to Gianna reaching out and squeezing his fingers except to give her a blank stare that Kane had no idea how to interpret. "She's infuriating."
Then, despite his harsh whisper, Kiernan's hand shifted, and he entangled Gianna's fingers with his. He was, again, throwing everything that had been established for the last twenty minutes of denial for a complete loop.
Did Kiernan love this woman or hate her?
The other occupant of the table, who Kane had been trying to ignore, piped in, "Kiernan sleeps with my husband instead of his wife. How strange. Is it because he's running from his relationship? Or is it because he is having an affair with Alexander?"
Crystal was Axel's wife, and Kane had no idea how the man had survived long enough to get her pregnant. She was beautiful. He could admit that, but none of that overshadowed how fucking cutting she was. Her insults were sharper than any blade he'd wielded and doubly fierce.
Kiernan glared at the woman, and she glared back. Kane nearly wished for Wyatt and Anna to return and divert the tension. They'd been kicked out of the kitchen for making out and pulling at each other's clothing once the card game had been abandoned.
The calico cat lying contentedly in Crystal's lap raised it's head sharply, tiny ears twitching.
This animal was a nightmare.
Kane had watched it scratch the corner of the kitchen's cupboards and receive minimal punishment for ruining the pine wood. If he looked closely, every door frame and piece of furniture had similar markings.
Gianna laughed. "There's no affair, Crystal. You know that."
"He drinks his blood," Crystal shot back, gaze fiery. "And sleeps in his bed."
Kane saw Reid perk up. If the moron had cat ears, they'd be twitching, too.
With a mouthful of food and a spoon between his teeth, Kane gently kneed the idiot's thigh to keep him from interjecting.
