Hannah was frowning as Kane tugged her away from the living room.
His ass kicked?
They walked hand-in-hand to the glass doors they'd passed earlier. Rain droplets dripped down the slightly frosted glass. When Kane opened the door wide, the chilly wind nipped at her bare arms and legs. She was grateful for her leather boots, tied tight to her ankles.
Lucas was smoking, leaning his forearms on the pine railing of the high deck, which overlooked the foggy forest of dense trees surrounding the property.
A wide wooden staircase slick with rain led to beige pavers and a yard of lush green grass. Below, she heard a soft voice that she recognized as Asha's.
Lucas's dark gaze, fixed on the trees below, fell to them as Kane closed the door with a soft click.
Pushing away from the railing, he approached with a fond smile and a noticeable limp. His face was battered, and his nose was bruised, a nasty shade of blue and black.
Hannah noticed that Kane's gaze had strayed to the thick white bandaging on Lucas's neck and remained with a deep frown.
"Nice to see you alive, mate," Lucas said.
Kane asked tightly, "You good?"
"Yeah," Lucas replied casually, shrugging. "I'm alive." He brought his cigarette to his lips and grinned. "Alive is better than dead, so I've been told."
Kane didn't look convinced. "Heard some shit went down without me."
"Yeah..." Lucas flicked his burning cigarette over the railing to extinguish in the wet grass below. "Might have a crush on Kiernan now."
"Not you, too." Kane groaned.
Hannah giggled. "It's his tight pants, right?"
Lucas winked at her. "Think it'd be hard to get him in bed?"
Kane snorted. "He'd kill you."
"Hot."
"You're joking, right?"
"Am I?"
"Seriously, he'll kill you, Lucas. Don't try that shit."
Hannah tensed. There was a threat in the air that she didn't understand. Kane looked pissed. They were kidding. Well, she was.
Lucas's grin faltered. "It's just a joke, mate."
Kane seemed to lose some of his tension. "Bad joke, asshole."
Lucas shrugged. He looked away, considering something, and then asked hoarsely, "Been to see Reid yet?"
A gust of wind rustled the trees, giving Hannah a shiver and reminding her she wasn't dressed for the colder weather. She had left her jacket in the car before their long hike. It hadn't been chilly then.
