The displacement wasn't smooth.

He wasn't practiced, and the magic shop was fucking far away. There was a reason why using magic to travel long distances wasn't advised. Doing so sapped his power quicker than when he really let loose. Not to mention, earlier, they had to hike through the woods to bypass the wards, and he was feeling drained—mentally and physically.

He was also bringing someone along, making the journey more strenuous.

When his feet struck solid ground and the familiar smell of the magic shop hit him, his knees threatened to give out.

The hand loosely clasped with his kept him upright.

"Rainer?" Kiernan sounded annoyingly worried. "Are you alright?"

For all his concern, the vampire began to pry Kane's fingers away from his forcibly.

Retaking his hand with a scoff, Kane focused on grabbing the nearby bookshelf and breathing through his intense wave of nausea.

Milton was the next to pop into existence, and when he saw Kane, he frowned. "Son?"

Kane waved his hand wildly before covering his mouth with his fingers. This wasn't typically what happened when he overused his magic. Headaches and fatigue were common, but he felt shaky and weak. Not that he'd admit that aloud.

"I'm good," he lied, then nearly lost his fucking stomach when a hand clapped his back hard.

"Wasn't that bad, mate." Lucas was driving down a high-speed road to pain. He kept goading and pushing. He was being a total asshole because he was angry at Reid, which was why Kane refused to leave unless Lucas came with them.

The idea of Lucas getting his perverted hands on Reid after he'd heard the idiot cry and beg to be hurt made him nearly fucking feral. And more importantly, Reid needed some time alone to come to terms with the bomb Kane dropped.

Everyone else seemed to be dealing with it in their own way. Crystal had begun sobbing, but out of everyone, Reid seemed to be hit the hardest by the news. He'd left without a word.

Kane didn't even have a chance to tell the idiot he was leaving.

He understood why Reid would be freaking out, but the moron had to know he'd never allow himself to be the blade that would end that beast and every vampire with it.

Fuck fate. It wasn't happening.

Having been displaced by Lucas, Gianna walked by, giving Kane a concerned once-over before her gaze swept the shop. "Wow. Look at this place. Stinks like magic, but it's cool." She moved closer to Kiernan, who was diligently checking the door and window locks.

Everything seemed to be in place.

Milton's gaze lingered on Kane before he turned to Lucas and said, "Here's a list." After handing a paper with scrawled writing to Lucas, Milton gave Kane a questioning look that showed how tired his father was. "They should be in the back room... Unless things have been moved since I've been gone."
