Lilt's eyes fluttered open as her phone vibrated out of control, she grabbed it to see that she'd overslept, it was not 9:0 an, "shit!" Lily cried out as she quickly got out of bed, Lily knew that her mother would be mad if she stayed in bed for this long, Sharon Shay considered it "sinful behaviour " and would often berate her daughter for it, both verbally and physically, for not living up to her 'perfect standards'.

"Lily! Are you ready yet??" Lily's mother's voice boomed from the hallway, Sharon Shay was a very strict and cold woman who didn't tolerate anything that was "unclean" in her eyes, she was tall and thin with pale skin, as well as blue eyes and blonde hair like Lily, Lily quickly got dressed and went to find her mother standing in the hallway, "where have you been??" Sharon demanded "church starts in five minutes, come on!" Sharon aggressively grabbed Lily's arm and dragged her out of the house.

On the way to their local church, Sharon and Lily drove past a homosexual couple holding hands and kissing while chatting and Sharon shouted out "you unclean filth! Take that away from public eyes and repent for your actions!" Before quickly driving off, Lily knew that her mother found same-sex relationships a cardinal sin, and would often shame any homosexual she saw, Sharon even disowned Lily's older sister, who Lily had never met, simply for supporting the lgbt community.

When the car parked up into the driveway, Sharon and Lily got out and headed towards the church, the building loomed above them and Lily couldn't help but feel a little intimidated by how tall and dark the catholic building looked. That morning was spent with listening to the vicar drone on about the word of God and the bible, Lily couldn't help but feel bored, Lily knew her mother wanted her to live by her religious views, but she also knew that Sharon wasn't exactly a saint herself.

Lily tried to listen, she knew this was important to her mother, but she couldn't help but feel like there was more to life than just going to the same old church and listening to the same old vicar and praying to the same deity over and over again, Lily saw nothing wrong with religion, in fact some of her friends were Christian...but she couldn't understand why her mother was so against homosexuals, Lily had known somebody from her school who was homosexual and they were completely nice, to Lily, same-sec relationships were just like ordinary relationships but well...both partners were the same gender.

Sharon listened to the vicar intently, she was very passionate and content with her religious lifestyle, she always tried her best to make her daughter see things her way, and couldn't understand why Lily wasn't as repulsed by same-sex couples as she herself was, Sharon had been raised to abide by "God's law" as her own mother had put it, and deemed anyone who was out of the ordinary or "imperfect" in her eyes, then they would be deemed as sinful and unworthy of God's graces.

When the service was over, Lily and Sharon went home and Sharon had told her daughter that she was going to work fir a few hours and would leave her daughter in charge, Sharon believed that Lily, being seventeen, could look after herself, "and don't forget, we have to meet with Hansel for dinner this evening" Sharon told Lily firmly, Lily tried to protest but Sharon didn't want to hear it and left Lily on her own, Hansel Tate was a rich and disgustingly entitled man who was Sharon's friend and Lily's arranged husband, he was also way older than Lily, he was twenty while she was still a seventeen year old girl in school, but Sharon didn't seem to find anything wrong with it.

Lily sat on the sofa and looked at an old picture framed on the wall of her father which had been crossed out with marker, Lily's father had left due to being tired of his wife's religious views and toxic behaviour towards he and his daughter, Lily wasn't sure how to feel about that...on the one hand she was glad that her father was possibly happier now that he was away from the toxicity, and she didn't hate her mother...but on the one hand Lily wished that her father had taken her with him, Lily then pulled out her phone and decided to invite her best friend round for company.
