Chapter 1

Mike stared at the sleeping girl on the couch.

He checked his watch. She had overslept and was now late to her shift by 4 minutes. Mike had noticed when 1 minute was left before her shift started but he had stood there and stared at Hanni without waking her up.

Hanni was taking a powernap before her torturous 12 hour shift was gonna start. She had specifically asked Maya, a fellow resident, to wake her up when she was done with her shift. Obviously Maya didn't do as said and this resulted in Hanni over sleeping.

When it had finally been 6 minutes, Mike woke her up by gently shaking her shoulder. Hanni opened her eyes and looked at the clock in the room, only to be horrified.

She was late and now Karley would have every reason to humiliate her.

Mike, upon noticing her expression quickly said "I can cover in for you. I don't mind."

Hanni rejected saying "Mike honestly, if you didn't mind, you wouldn't have had to wake me up and then tell me this. It's okay though. Thanks for waking me up." She gave him a small smile and got up from the couch.

She wasn't being ungrateful. Mike was weird.

She had found him staring at her multiple times during a day. She wasn't interested. There was honestly nothing wrong with him and he might even have been handsome for all Hanni cared.

Right now, she wasn't interested in any guy and just wanted to focus on her work.

Exiting the room, she tied her hair up in a pony tail and went to the desk to check which room she was assigned to.

Entering her room, she quickly took off her overall making sure not to make too much noise. Aurora was sleeping and she didn't wanna wake her up.

Aurora was like her sister. Her parents had sent her to a boarding school out of state and she didn't like it there. So thankfully for her Hanni and her parents lived right there. She moved in with them and took admission in a nearby university.

They were first cousins and Hanni treated her like a sister even going as far to share rooms with her even when she knew Med study was really hard and she'd have to stay up nights studying, Aurora didn't mind though so it worked out.

Hanni changed and jumped into her bed, ready to sleep. That was until Aurora whispered, "Hanni?"

"Yeah? What's up?" Hanni replied.

"I couldn't sleep." Aurora whispered. So much for trying to stay quiet, Hanni thought.

"Is something bothering you?" She asked.

"They're getting you married." Aurora said in a small voice.

Hanni had to process her words for them to finally register in her head.

"What?" She whispered back. "With who? and why didn't they talk to me about this?"

"I don't know, I wasn't supposed to know but I overheard them talking. You won't say yes right? I don't want to be alone here." Aurora pleaded.

Hanni frowned in the dark, "Don't worry, I won't leave you. I'll have a word with father in the morning."

"Goodnight Hanni." Whispered Aurora relieved.

"Night." replied Hanni conflicted by her emotions. Her parents were arranging a marriage for her without even talking to her about it? Surely nothing was final and they'd listen to her if she said no right? hopefully because Hanni wasn't ready for marriage.
