CHAPTER 1
'Cuts and Bruises'
Ellie's POV:
"Fuck no!" My voice rang out through the small space of the stables. I was unbelievably pissed. I was not about to let some stranger I didn't even know come in here and act like they owned the place.
"Ellie just-"
"No, Joel! That's my final answer." I shook my hands in the air, waving him off, I didn't want to deal with this.
I run the brush over the horse's mane, turning my attention back to that.
"This isn't up for negation." Joel's stern voice cut through the air.
"You're right, it's fucking not. I'm not going to let a stranger live with me for fuck's sake."
"Look I know you're upset-" I cut him off, not letting his pathetic excuses win.
"You're right! I am upset!" I let my anger out on him. If he thought I was going to just sit here and let him do whatever he wanted, then he was fucking wrong. I was trying not to blame him for everything but it's pretty hard when he just keeps trying to make decisions for me.
"I'm upset at the fact that you think you have control over me when you don't." I saw the hurt flash through his face, almost making me stop my rant, but I continued. "I'm not a fucking kid anymore Joel. Stop acting like it." I point an accusing finger at him.
He sighs in defeat, looking at the ground. "Just... all I'm asking is to think about it... alright? That girl... she's been through a lot, and it'd be good for her to be around people."
I scoff. "I've been through a lot, Joel! And I don't need some 'girl' coming in here and ruining what I have going on."
He nods, not saying anything else. "Think about it." Is all he says as he walks out of the stables. I felt my glare could burn holes in his back as he walked off.
How dare he come in here and tell me what to do. I throw the brush on the ground in anger, my actions startling the horse. I walked out of the stables, angry thoughts filling my mind as I stomped on the gravel towards my house.
----
I immediately regret my decision already. Long story short, I gave in. I mean I knew how it felt in a way because when I saw that pathetic girl sitting in the chair, looking terrified out of her mind, I decided to not be a pain in the ass for once and let her into my space with 'open arms'.
She was already making things awkward enough as we entered through the door, I immediately headed towards my fridge, pulling out a drink to wash my thoughts away.
I flop down on my bed, trying to ignore the burning eyes into my back.
I hear the floor creaking before the small squeak of the couch feels the air. I look at her from behind my shoulder, dirty blond hair pulled back into a low ponytail, and fainted freckles scattered not only on her face but also on her arms.
She was looking down at her feet that sat on the floor, her shoes still on.
I felt almost guilty staring at how tense she was, I mean sure I was an asshole sometimes, but I wasn't a flat-out jerk.
