Blaire groaned as the morning sun blazed through the gap in the tent's opening, casting warm rays directly onto her face. She shifted onto her side, stretching her limbs as she slowly pushed herself upright. The early morning light always made getting out of bed challenging, especially when camping. Despite her reluctance, the sun's persistent glow made it nearly impossible to stay asleep.
With a tired yawn, Blaire grabbed her pillow and tossed it across the tent at her brother's cot without looking. The pillow hit the lump in the sleeping bag with a soft thud, eliciting a groan from Blaine. "Blaine, I'm making coffee. Want some?" she called out.
"Sure," came the sleepy reply from her brother.
Blaire glanced around for her sandals, eventually finding them near the tent's entrance. She slipped them on and stepped out into the crisp morning air. The dew-covered grass felt cool beneath her feet as she made her way towards the tree line, where they had hung their food in a bear bagging system.
However, as she scanned the canopy for the familiar sight of their hanging food, her brow furrowed in confusion. The bear bag, usually suspended high between two trees, was nowhere to be seen. 'That's odd,' she thought, peering into the branches and scanning the area.
She continued to search for several minutes, her initial confusion giving way to concern. 'I don't think I've got the wrong tree. Maybe Blaine moved it? Should I go back and ask him?' Her mind raced through possibilities, each one more unsettling than the last. The usual practice of securing their food had been meticulously followed—so where could it have gone?
Blaire hesitated, her eyes darting between the trees and the path back to the tent. A mix of irritation and unease crept into her thoughts. She finally made up her mind, turning back toward the tent to confront Blaine. As she walked, she couldn't shake the feeling that something was off.
As Blaire walked back toward the tent, her surroundings seemed to shift subtly but unmistakably. The once-familiar camping area had transformed into an unfamiliar landscape that made her pause in bewilderment. The clearing was now enveloped by a dense forest of towering evergreen trees, their thick trunks seeming to close in on the small, grassy area where their tent had been.
The grass was no longer the dull green she remembered but was instead dotted with vibrant flowers in shades of purple, blue, orange, and red. Blaire's gaze lingered on the blue flowers in particular, a color she had never seen in the wild before. Her mind raced as she tried to recall any previous visits to this camping ground, but nothing matched the striking beauty of these new blooms.
As she took in the scene further, Blaire noticed a stream meandering through the middle of the clearing, its clear water shimmering in the morning light. The stream seemed to have shifted position since the night before; she could have sworn it had been on the left side of their camp, not running directly through the center. 'I must be mistaken,' she told herself, trying to rationalize the change as a trick of her tired mind.
