" I prefer the term warlock. Sounds a lot more biblical, don't you think, lycanthrope? "

~ KASPER MIKAELSON to HAYLEY MARSHALL

☆《》¤

HAYLEY MARSHALL sat at the deserted bar of Rousseau's, the midday sun casting long shadows through the windows. She twirled the rim of her beer glass, lost in her own thoughts until the bartender, Adeline Bellatrix, broke the silence.

"Third time in here this week," Adeline remarked, wiping down the counter.

"I'm obsessed with the gumbo, Addie," Hayley replied with a half-hearted smile.

"You know, ladies in the 9th ward say my best friend, Sophie, bleeds a piece of her soul into every dish," Adeline said, glancing across the room at her oldest and dearest friend.

Hayley leaned forward, her expression serious, "I asked around the Quarter about my family..."

"And?" Adeline prompted.

"Nothing. Zero. I can't find a single person who remembers them," Hayley sighed, frustration with a hint of sadness was evident in her voice.

Suddenly, a man approached from behind, causing Hayley to jump, "That's because people like you were run out of here years ago," he said casually.

"Sorry, didn't mean to scare you, love," the man said, his thick English accent coming through, as he took a seat beside her at the bar; Adeline pouring him a glass of whiskey without a second thought.

Hayley turned to face him, her guard up, "Who the hell are you?"

"This is my husband, Kasper," Adeline introduced. "You need to excuse his manners, they're pretty much non-existent," she teased, flashing the man a smirk.

"And you need to excuse my ex-wife's memory," he started to say, putting emphasis on the word, 'ex-wife'. "She seems to have forgotten we're divorced," the man continued, his tone laced with amusement, sending the woman behind the bar a playful glare.

"Not for another two months, Kas," Adeline retorted with a smirk.

"You two are definitely married. You certainly fight like it," Hayley observed, sipping her beer.
