KASPER MIKAELSON stood in the dimly lit sitting room of the mausoleum, gazing out the stained window, watching his coven gather together, helping the newest member, Calista, who joined about a year ago, and was surprisingly quick to connect with the element air, practise her elemental magic, which was the only magic they could practise without Davina detecting it.

Elemental Magic is an ancient force tied to five key elements: Earth, Fire, Water, Air, and the rarest of all, Spirit, which governs souls and the connection to those who have passed on. Most witches are born with an affinity for a single element, and mastering even one can take decades of dedication. Balancing more than one is uncommon, and full mastery of all five is believed to be impossible—except for Adeline Bellatrix, who alone could control all elements with ease.

While few have ever been able to command Spirit, a power allowing witches to communicate with the dead and manipulate souls, Maya Lennon, Kasper's confidant, was the only witch he knew to have mastered it fully. For most, elemental magic is a lifelong challenge, with progress slow and often incomplete. This was why many didn't practise it and leaned more towards spirit/ancestral magic, which of course required a lot of skill, but was a lot easier to master.

He turned at the sound of footsteps behind him. Maya had entered, her face etched with concern, "Ah, it's not like ye to brood, Kassie," she said, teasingly, but at the same time her voice was calm and comforting - Kasper was so glad to have his best friend back, he had missed her, even her scoldings. She had a unique way of keeping him in line. "What's troublin' ya?"
