Chapter 5 Zosimus theory

'Just ask her out mate' Sirius wrote on a piece of paper. He threw the paper across to James.

'When its the right time'

'fine :('

'God this is so boring'

'agreed. wanna walk out?'

'sure'

James rose his hand waving it frantically.

"Yes Mr Potter?" Professor Binns groaned in his usual monotonous voice. He looked like he died because he was so boring. Professor Binns is a ghost. Apparently he doesn't know he is dead...sad life.

"Could Sirius and I be excused to the bathroom?" I felt whispers and eyes staring at me as they were surprised I used manners. I rolled my eyes and looked back at Professor Binns.

He waved me off probably saying he doesn't care so Sirius and I grabbed our bags and ran out the classroom.

"How bout we just go to the library and wait for Lily to come after the bell rings?" I ask Sirius. He smirked and we walked to the library. A few minutes later I hear someone call my name.

"James! Oi potter!" I snicker realizing who the voice was. Turning on my heel I face the voice and see the same fiery red hair matched with emerald eyes running after us.

"You cut class Evans? I'm impressed!" I beam at her still surprised. Lily rolled her eyes.

"Yeah well don't be expecting that i'm gonna impress you anymore, besides i know all about the legend of death."She boasted smiling at herself. Her cocky attitude suddenly turned into a serious grave expression. "We have to go to the library quick! I think i know about the ring James keeps seeing." She exclaimed excitedly. I rose an eyebrow impressed, once again and followed Sirius to the library with Lily trailing not too far behind.

We reached a point where we realised we had never been to the library. Sirius and I turned around and faced Lily who simply looked disgusted that we didn't know the directions to the library. After a long lecture, Lily took lead and we were welcomed by the dead-silent, dusty but warm library.

Sirius and I followed Lily down the shelves of books till we reached the restricted area. She handed a note and quickly scanned through the books till her finger halted at a book called ' Greatest inventions'

I watched her tuck a piece of hair behind her ear and bite her lip in concentration. Unfortunately Lily looked up when i let a chuckle slip out of my lips. She shot a glare continued flipping through the book. Several minutes passed and Sirius and I were still bored waiting for Lily to gasp or you know say found it. I shoved my face in between two books and squished my face in boredom.

"Ok now that was beyond what i was expecting." She laughed staring at Sirius and I's bored faces.

"What?" I ask her confused. She pulled out another book called ' Life and discovery of Mandrake roots'. I gasped.

"Yeah I found the text ages ago but wanted to see how you two do."She looked at her nails in admiration while Sirius mouths "Why do you like her?". I shake my head then turn my head back to Lily.

"Alright you had your fun now what does it say!" I demanded. She smirks and begins reading.

"THE ZOSIMUS THEORY-

Zosimus was an Egyptian born Greek alchemist who believed that all substances are composed of the four elements of nature - Fire, Water, Air and Earth.

He collected together all the knowledge on khemia, as it was then known, and compiled a 28 volume encylopedia.

It is thanks to Zosimus that we know what we do about Egyptian/Greek alchemy. Much of the knowledge was destroyed by the Roman emperor Diocletian and Christians who burned the library in Alexandria in 391. After the discovery of the four elements were made, Zosimus created the alchemists ring which can produce the powers of fire, water, air and earth when the chosen person wears it. The last recorded and known heir was Groklum Merlin. His intentions were pure thus activating the ring. However if a person who is not a rightful heir claims the ring, it will disappear till it is found once again. " Lily gasped taking a deep breath. My eyes broadened and jaw dropped. I glanced at Sirius to see him displaying the same shocked expression.

"So the ring has powers of the 4 elements-"

"And the only way it can be found is if the rightful heir finds it?" Sirius continues after he cut me off. Lily nodded. She returned the book and we followed her out the door to the Gryffindor common room.

I slump onto the couch and try remember my dream from the night before. The tall young boy wanting the ring but he thought i had taken it. What if this was real and the boy wanted the ring...he didn't seem like he was going to use it for good reasons.

My thoughts were disrupted by giggles. I swiftly jerk by head towards the corner of the common room to find a girl staring at me and blushing. I smirked and walked towards her. I saw as her cheeks turned deep scarlet and her friends waved. Obviously they were spying on us.

"H-hey James" The girl stuttered nervously but then gained confidence.

"Hi, so why were you staring at me?" I asked leaning against the wall opposite her. She let out another giggle.

"Hm I wonder why a girl wouldn't stare at you James." She raised her eyebrow and smiled.

"Yeah. Checking me out are we?" I cockily said.

"Maybe" The girl clasped onto a book and swayed side to side flirting. I smirked.

"I'm Genevieve" She took out a hand towards me. I shook it and stared at her brown chocolate eyes and chestnut hair.

"Well Genevieve, how bout we meet at the lake tomorrow before sunset?" She just giggled and skipped to the girls dormitories where her friends were. I rolled my eyes, amused, then continued thinking about the tall boy and the hooded figure.

LILY'S POV

I heard three girls giggling so loudly that it started to get on my nerves just like Potter. I heard the door open and the giggles became more clearer. Annoyed, I slammed by book shut and walked up to the girls.

"Hey Gen!" I said, plastering a fake smile.

"Hay Lils!" She replied excitedly.

"Whats the giggling about?" She turned back to me and frowned.

"I thought it would've spread through the school like rapid fire. After all, James did ask me out." Genevieve said cockily, just like james and looked at her nails in admiration.

"WHAT!?" I blurted out. Realizing what i said i quickly slammed my mouth shut and covered it with my two hands. Gen sent a confused look.

"Well you rejected Potter, so why does it bother you?" I shook my head and walked over to my bed. My eyes flickered and i was out like a light.
