The next few days I recover from my sickness quickly, with Satoru's help of course. I've also finally completed the acquisition which has been hanging over me for so long, and as I send one final email of the day, I exit my office before meeting Nanami in the hallway.

"Thank you for your hard work today." He tells me with a formal nod and I give him a smile in response. "I'm sure you're glad to have all of this over and done with." I wave my hand dismissively in response.

"It was a pleasure." I tell him and he laughs at the pride I take in my work. "I'm sorry I can't make it to the celebrations tonight."

"It's fine, you deserve a holiday." Nanami replies and I cringe in response.

"I don't know if I'd really call this a holiday, but I'll try to relax. Not looking forwards to the family drama about to unfold though..." I say begrudgingly and Nanami laughs.

"It's a shame you're not coming, but I understand. From what I hear, Satoru can't attend either." Nanami says and I let out a small, fake surprised 'oh' in response. I already knew this, Satoru isn't coming because he's catching a flight with me, to Italy, to the wedding. Nanami gives me a knowing look and I look away awkwardly. "I hope the two of you have fun." He says at long last, his lips curving into a light smile (something rare for Nanami) but his voice holds something else, is it... apprehension?

I brush off any unwanted thoughts before whispering a thank you to him as we part ways. Unfortunately, my trials are not over due to the fact that as soon as I leave my office building, Toji is stood outside smoking a cigarette. I glance over to him, flashing him a courteous smile before turning away, hoping that it's the end of our interaction. A few seconds pass and I see Satoru's black Maybach pull up to the curb as I start walking towards it.

"Y/n?" I hear a voice from behind me call, and I turn around to see Toji stubbing out his cigarette under his foot before beckoning me over with his hand. I look between him and the black car in front of me before jogging over lightly to Toji, just to see what he wants. He is my boss after all. "Have fun on your holiday." He says and I give him a small nod in response. "When you come back, there's something Nanami and I want to discuss with you." He says in a loaded way and my eyes flash up to his face.

I can't stop the hope I feel from showing through to my expression, could this finally be what I've waited for all along? Has Toji finally dropped his grudge against me so that I can at long last get the partner position I deserve?

"It's about Megumi, I want to transfer him to a different seat." He finishes after a long pause and my expression falters for a second.

"Oh, okay." I start. I can tell he's taking pleasure in this, getting my hopes up and letting me down. How naive could I be? "That's fine, but let him see what I'm tasked with next and then he can choose, he might want to stay after all." I tell Toji and he gives me a nonchalant shrug in response. He turns towards the entrance to the building to go back inside, and I turn my back to him before letting out a long sigh.

"And Y/n?" He calls again, causing me to practically freeze on the spot. I turn around slowly to give him an apathetic smile. "Try to not appear in any headlines with Satoru Gojo. It's not a good look for the firm." He says and my lips part slightly in shock. Before I can say anything to respond, Toji disappears through the glass doors to the building and I'm left standing on what feels like ground which could crumble away at any second.

So much work. So much effort. I've slaved away on that transaction for months, yet he doesn't even mention it. Instead, he baits me into thinking I'm finally being promoted, and then decides to shame me for what he thinks is my love life when Satoru and I aren't even together. I clench my fingers around my bag strap in an attempt to try and let out some of my anger as my eyes begin to prickle with tears. I can't believe I was so stupid to think anything good could ever come out of Toji's mouth. Sometimes it really feels like I'm not going anywhere at this firm, and Satoru's has only made me doubt my position more.
