'What they know doesn't define you, what they think is how they define you' - unknown

《》

Elizabeth sits in the rickety chair with her shoulders as far back as possible, she remembers to keep her chin up and to always stare at the person in front of her directly in the eyes, it's the polite thing to do.

The dress she wears is only of a thin material, a simple sheet of white linen embroidered with taffy pink Tulips and lilac Salvias, the neck line is higher covering most of her modesty and the bottom of the dress that slips past her knees is frilly and she plays with it in her hands.

Fingers fumbling against the fabric to calm her mind, her mind of which is in shambles.

Across from her sat at the rustic office desk is her father, Martin, whom leans his elbows on the surface holding a single piece of paper in his hands.

What Elizabeth can see from where the light reflects on the paper is only a few sentences in blotchy black ink and sensing his daughters attempts at reading the words he places the paper firmly flat down on the desk.

Elizabeth stares at her father testing her strength to not look away, her father has always been loud, boisterous and overall a jolly man but today Martin sits across from his daughter in his pressed suit appearing stern and not jolly, far from it.

Elizabeth swallows, as she dares and fumbles faster along the fabric of the dress craving the soft texture that brings her some offer of comfort.

"Dear child, need not to look so frightened, you are not in trouble," Martin assured and bestowed her with a fatherly smile. Elizabeth does smile in return, the action along her dress halting and instead she lets her shoulders fall.

"It is hard to not feel at unease father, this matter seems somewhat serious, more serious then any other," she replied, her baby blue eyes slipping away from the eye contact but her mother's stern voice fills her head and she quickly regains the contact.

Martin only waves his hand dismissively of his child's woes, "indeed the matter is of a high importance but I am sure you will be quick to agree, we are your family after all."

Elizabeth is quick to nod but too innocent to understand the underlying threat to her father's words. Martin is a man of family as well as business and these times call for business to override those of blood, his daughter and their trust can wait.

"What is the matter you require me for, then?" Asked Elizabeth, the anticipation of awaiting an answer becoming too much for her to simply settle back and allow her father to lead the conversation.

"You know of the casino we have here in England of course," Martin begins and raises a brow in question.

Elizabeth nods, "of course I do, the Whitness Casino."
