The Host ¤ The Next Chapter: 4
Staying true to my words, I waited for Seeker Nightwalker.
Seeker Skyfall had been the very man that Healer Sunshine had argued with my first day in my human body. From what I could tell between those two, they didn't get along. However, as we do with all other Souls, we practice pacients and kindness towards one another. They couldn't fight with one another no matter how much they didn't like the other.
I had not met anyone except for those two Souls. The other Seekers I ran into were just by chance. Now I was waiting for another of my kind that I had never been introduced to before. I was both nervous and excited.
The door to the plain room opened to reveal a human from a place my mind identified as India. He had the usual smoked skin and black hair that those species of humanoids had inherited from their ancestors. His lips were slightly pink and separated themselves from the rest of his skin. Gleaming white teeth shone underneath. Like all Souls, his eyes were blue with a ring around the pupil.
The Seeker sat down in the chair acrossed from me and introduced himself. "My name ess Seekah Nightvalkar."
Indian accent, my brain told me, deffinately Indian. I was thankful that he couldn't hear what I was thinking. That would have been very rude if I had said it out loud.
"You ar called May, correct?" this Seeker asked.
I nodded. "Yes."
"Seekah Skyfall haz sent meh ere to find what your place will be." Seeker Nightwalker folded his hands on the table. "Az you know, many Souls choose to remain merely citizens of za oarder. A select few become Ealers or Seekers. Because this is your first life, you ave not been assigned a part. I am ere to determine that part." he informed me.
Seeker Nightwalker placed a folder from inside the coat he wore on the table. Inside was the records of this human's body, the memories that I had spoke of to Seeker Skyfall earlier, and my own profile.
"According to za files, this uman was looking towards a future in za medical field." Seeker spoke as he opened the folder and pulled the evidence out. "Ealer Sunshine az also recommended that a profession in za medical field vould be best for you." he paused so that I could put in my own input.
"Yes." I agreed.
Seeker Nightwalker pulled a pen out of his coat pocket and opened the cap. The exposed end hovered next to the part of my file labeled JOB. "And vould you like to take this occupation?" he asked.
"If it is for the best," I thought out loud. "Yes."
Under the order of the Seekers, I was placed under Healer Sunshine's imediate apprenticeship. She would teach me what the different sprays were used for and what kind of wounds they were placed on.
All healing items were labeled brand names like No Pain or Heal. Cleanse, like its name stated, cleaned a wound so that infection wouldn't settle in. Smooth got rid of scars. Cool made fevers disappear.
I found that there were many more medicines than I had previously thought there were.
I learned Cure removes diseases from a person's system, Mend brings feeling back to destroyed nerve endings, and Grow helps bones grow back. Sleep sedates a pacient if they are not compliant. Work heals torn muscles. Sick Leaver gets rid of mild colds.
The main job of a Healer is to make sure the pacient is not traumatized. If needed, we use Calm to dull their senses. This allows us to work on the person without them causing damage to themselves and others.
I work under Healer Sunshine as her assitant for five days after I have memorized each spray. Each day, we deal with Souls who have either hurt their bodies or fix the human bodies who will be used for Souls. The job isn't as hard as I thought it would be. I simply keep focused and stick to my training, telling the pacient that everything will be all right.
Of course, if the pacient is a human, I do not speak to them. They are usually strapped to the table unconscious. If one happens to wake up, I use Sleep to put them out again. That has only happened to me three times. Twice with the same pacient. Their sudden awakeness usually startles me until I remember to reach for Sleep. Then they are out again and I don't have to worry about being harmed.
By the end of my training, I'm re-summoned by Seeker Nightwalker for my evaluation. If I have passed everything, according to Healer Sunshine, then I will be assigned to a location. I might remain here, or I might be sent away to a place that is short on Healers. Wherever I am needed, I will go, even if it is away from those I know. For the better of my kind, I will do this.
When I enter the white room again, Seeker Nightwalker is waiting for me at the table. I walk over to him in the new white Healer outfit I was given and sit acrossed from him. The same manila folder sits before me.
"May, I am pleased to inform you that you ave passed za test." Seeker congradulates me.
I nod my head and reply kindly. "Thank you."
"You ave been assigned to a Center in za California area." he announces much to my displeasure. "A transport vill take you to your new location tomorrow morning. I vish you a good sleep tonight." Seeker Nightwalker stands up from his chair and closes the folder. "You vill need it."
Seeker strides away from the table, leaving me in the room alone.
So I am to go to California. My human mind tells me that is where Celebrities and HollyWood resides. The place of lights and cameras. It's only natural that they're short on Healers there. Many of the Souls in that area took on the roles of their human's former lives. That means TV stars and talkshow hosts. Movies are still produced and released to the masses from that location. After all, us Souls only improve on the society we implace ourselves in. We only change the things that are not acceptable like war or violence.
I get up from my chair and leave the room, going back to my temporary residence for the last time. Tomorrow I will be California bound and I must take Seeker Nightwalker's advice. Getting sleep in my bed here will be my only chance. Jenny's memories tell me that sleeping while in transporting vechiles is not pleasant.
