ten. SLTS vs. C**LORDS
Reggie sat perched on the pass-through window ledge between the kitchen and the living room, relishing the aroma of freshly baked muffins that wafted through the apartment. He deftly plucked the blueberries out of his muffin one by one, savoring each burst of flavor as soon as they were released from the soft muffin. In the background, the television flickered a random crime show that Carter had put on before leaving for work, casting an eerie glow over the otherwise cozy living room.
"How many times do I have to tell you not to sit on the ledge?" Vanessa asked, approaching the kitchen in her blue hospital scrubs. In her hands were used dishes from her and Carter's shared room. Reggie mumbled a few annoyed words before hopping down from his seat on the ledge. "Thank you. You ready? I can drop you off on the way to the hospital."
The younger hummed in an agreeing manner. He took hold of the muffin and walked over to his backpack. He turned back to see his mother in the kitchen grabbing all of the food that she wanted for lunch before heading toward the front door.
Reggie twisted the handle and pulled the door open. When he stepped out into the hallway, he heard someone yell, "Watch out!", before being knocked onto the ground with someone lying on top of him.
Once his eyes opened, he saw a masculine face close to his. His eyes were a chocolate brown hue, almost darker than his own. Reggie's eyes then traveled to the most distinguishable part of the boy. His hair was buzzed down and stained a rosy pink color.
"Wow," Vanessa let out as she glanced at the two boys on the floor. She leaned against the doorframe with an amused look on her face. Reggie quickly shoved the pink-haired lad off of him and stood up, straightening out his clothes as he did.
"I am so sorry," he apologized while picking up Reggie's bag from the floor, which happened to fall off of his shoulders when they made contact. He then picked up the contraption that caused all of the commotions: his skateboard. "No wonder the landlord said not to skate in the halls."
"No worries," Reggie spoke with an assuring nod of his head. "You're with the new family that moved in two doors down, right?"
"Yeah," the boy responded. He nervously held out his hand for a handshake. "I'm Akeno- well, people call me Aki, but some people call me Akeno... like my mother."
"Well, Aki, I'm Reggie and this is my mother," Reggie said. He shook the boy's hand and pointed at his mother standing in the doorframe, who still displayed a look of amusement.
"Vanessa," she said, also shaking the boy's hand. "Do you go to Hartley High, Aki?"
"Just enrolled last week," Aki acknowledged and nodded his head. "Why?"
