Soulmates are kind of complicated but basically everyone has a soulmates, whether you have one or three, every single person has at least one. In the very rare cases you someone has 4 but it is unheard of for anyone to have 5 or more.
Everyone is given their marks at the age of 16. On your exact birthday you will receive a set amount of marks on your body, tattoo looking things, that indicate who your soulmate is. For example for Tony stark his is a arc reactor (shown below) to show who he is. After that person has received all their marks by the end of the day, the first time they see their soulmate after that the mark will start to burn in a painful way.
It isn't easy to mistake someone as your soulmate, you will feel a tingling in the part once they are about a mile away, as they get closer it will start to feel like a burning sensation. Once the soulmates are about 10 feet apart it will hurt and there will be some sort of pull, wanting you to look at the eyes of your soulmate. As soon as both eyes meet the world feels like it stops for both soulmates and the burning will hurt more. To stop the burning both soulmates must accept the bond or break it. Without accepting or breaking the bond it will forever hurt and it will be even more painful when they are close
Breaking the bond means there is nothing either person can do to be soulmates again. All it takes is one of them to break it. But if only one accepts it and the other does nothing then the one who accepted it will still be in pain just not as much.
If both soulmates accept it that's final mean they are safe forever. At any point one can just break the bond if something happens.
It is a big deal to break a bond. Before or after accepting it. Most everyone loves their soulmate immediately because fate put them together but in the slim chances that it does happen it is almost always regretted.
What are soulmates?
When 2 or more people are soulmate that means they can feel each others emotions, pain (most mentally and physically), can sometimes read each others thoughts, and just overall are fated to love each other.
Feeling each others emotions means if there is a strong emotion being felt by one of the soulmates, everyone else that is mated to them (if both have accepted the bond) will feel that or sense it.
Feeling each others pain is kind of like emotions just painfully. Depending on the person it normally is just a dampened version of what the other soulmate is feeling but it is hard to not notice or ignore.
Reading each others minds is a 1 in a million chance for soulmates to get it. But if you do depending on the strength of it, you can talk to each other using your mind.
