Watching Hailey be thrown airborne by an oncoming car was in one word: horrific. Her once strong stature and gliding walk was now lying feeble and non-moving on the pavement. We didn't know how to speak. "We have to call someone!" Anna screams. Emma is checking her pulse. She says she's alive and we see that her chest is rising and falling slowly. I whip out my phone and dial 911. The paramedics arrive and take her away. We call Mrs. Mathews. She is panicked and heads straight to the hospital.

Later at home I lie in my bed. It's almost four. I got the news from Mrs. Mathews about twenty five minutes ago. Hailey is in a coma and suffered head trauma. She has an eighty percent chance of waking up. Because I can't sleep I decide to study for my Chem test tomorrow but all I can see is Hailey being slammed by that car over and over again.
••
As I get out of the shower and get dressed I hear a knock on the door. It's Maggie. "Sarah I am so sorry about Hailey. I'm sure she will be fine" she says. "Yeah? And how would you know?" She starts to answer but I cut her off. "I'm going to be late. Bye" I shove past her and storm down the stairs. I forget my essay assignment and dart back upstairs to get it when I hear Maggie on the phone. "Look everything that happened that night was for the greater good. No, Sarah doesn't know anything. Because what we did wasn't bad. We are innocent in the actuality if it. Fine. Bye Evan. No I said you're good. Your ass is covered. Yes. Okay. Bye." What the fuck could that mean? Does she mean the night Abbey died? Is she talking to Evan Thomas? I run out of the house forgetting the essay but not forgetting what I overheard.
