I walked towards the Great Hall where dinner was being served, hoping to talk to Severus there. He was probably just a little shocked that I had won the potions contest, but would come around once we had a chance to talk to each other, I convinced myself.
When I arrived at the gate, I noticed it was nosier than usual and realised that the match between Gryffindor and Slytherin must have ended as well. I sighed before opening the gate, I really didn't feel like Potter and the rest of the Gryffindors rubbing their victory in our faces right now.
But when I entered, it wasn't the Gryffindor table that was ecstatic, but the Slytherins who were celebrating. I looked at the Gryffindors who were sulking and saw that James was holding something shimmering. Had he caught the snitch? But then how had the Slytherins managed to win? I sat down at the table between Malfoy and Evelyne who were laughing loudly at a story from Kragge.
"What happened?" I whispered to Evelyne, "I saw that Potter has caught the snitch." She looked at me with a huge grin.
"Ohh, Lily, it was the best thing ever. Potter was so focused on catching the snitch and all those self-absorbed Gryffindors were watching their top player. They didn't even notice that we had scored seven extra goals and were leading by a 160 points."
"No, you're not serious, are you?" She nodded and looked at the Gryffindors with a triumphant smile.
"How was your potions competition?" I was silent, glanced at Severus who was sitting across from us, stirring his soup. He didn't look at us, deeply lost in his thoughts.
"Hey," Evelyne said, "it doesn't matter that you didn't win, you were the youngest students there."
"Ohh," Severus said softly, his voice sounded cold "Someone did win." Evelyne looked at me.
"Noooo... You guys won from a bunch of seventh-years? I didn't expect that... What an achievement for Slytherin today, hé?" She looked happily from me to Severus, but her smile faded when she saw Severus' hateful expression.
He turned to me and hissed: " Why didn't you tell me you continued practising behind my back?"
I looked at him in surprise. "I only practised with you, Sev."
"Ohh, and that's why you can brew one of the most difficult potions by yourself?!" He stood up from the table. His chair made an awful shrieking noise when he dragged it over the floor. I looked around me at my fellow students, feeling all the blood draining from my face. The Slytherins stared at the two of us in surprise.
"Sev..." I said almost pleadingly.
"No Lily, really I've had enough. I thought we were a team, but apparently that doesn't mean anything to you." I could no longer look at him properly, my eyes clouded with tears that I absolutely did not want to shed when the whole table was watching us.
"You know I can't do anything about that..." He put his fingers on the bridge of his nose, breathed in and out slowly before he continued talking. His voice sounded cold.
"I'm really starting to doubt that now..."
Blood rushed back to cheeks. I couldn't believe that he was accusing me of lying, that he didn't want to believe me and, above all, that he was such an incredibly jealous jerk.
"Hmm, how nice to hear how you feel about me." He looked at me incredulously, as if I had no right to talk back. "You are a terrible friend, do you know that?" I said, my voice as cold as his. I was now standing up as well. Only heard how loud I was talking when the whole hall was silent. Severus, Evelyne and Malfoy looked at me with wide eyes. I felt the tears pricking my eyes again and ran away from the table, away from my friends.
