Tony's POV
I was the third person to arrive at Gwen's house. It was about 1:10 when I got there because I had to do a lot of convincing of my parents. Sigh, they are very protective. I changed into a pair of basketball shorts and red t-shirt. So I walked up the white steps and looked at the door of Gwen's gray house and knocked on the door. Emily almost instantly answered it and greeted me. She changed it of her skirt and into a pair of dark jeans and black tank top plus her hair was pulled back into a ponytail. She gestured me in and I had a bag with me that I dropped on the floor. There was a room that had a tv and two long brown couches that were arranged in an L shape, a coffee table, and a fluffy recliner. On the other side of the room there was a computer and around the corner was a kitchen and dinning room. The room had pictures of tigers and cheetahs and Gwen and her brother on the red brown colored walls. There was stairs leading upstairs to what I assumed was bedrooms and stairs leading downstairs to what I think was a basement or garage. Gwen was curled up against Levi on the couch, both changed out of their funeral clothes.
"Hey guys," I said as I walked over to them and sat on the opposite end of the couch. Emily stood across from me. They all said mumbled greetings.
"By the way," Gwen said. "Jack, Rebecca, Jasmine, and Adam can't come so that means that Charlie and Ava are the only ones left to come."
An awkward silence followed where I just looked around the living room.
"So...?" Emily said. "Um....to fill this awkward silence, when did you guys find out she had cancer?"
Of course Emily was the one to bring up the painful topics that we need to talk about. I didn't really like Emily. She always got in trouble with teachers, starting fights, cussing too much and she was Sophie's friend! Sophie did not need to be around someone like her.
I remembered when Sophie told me she had cancer:
Sophie suddenly texts me one Saturday asking me to come over and that it was urgent. Being a good boyfriend I came over right away, skipping my baseball practice. She was looking kind of pale when I got to her house. Her golden curly hair was down messy around her face and her bright blue eyes were big and gray. She had us go on a walk. I remember the sky being a brilliant blue and the weather warmer than normal. She walked down the street and around a corner then suddenly she walked out into the middle of the street and laid down.
"What are you doing?" I asked with a grin on my face. She didn't answer.
After a moment she sat up and said "well? Are you coming?"
"You're going to get hit by a car." I said looking around.
"No cars come down this road." She said. "If they do you can hear them."
I sighed and laid down next to her as we peered up at the sky. There was a perfect view of the clouds, no trees covering the road. I took her hand in my and she sighed.
"I wish I could just stop time and stay here."
That's the thing I love about Sophie. She always said the most magical things.
"Tony," she said.
"Yeah?" I answered.
"I have cancer."
"What?" I sat up and looked at her to make sure she wasn't lying.
She wasn't.
"I found out yesterday." She said. "I'm sorry."
"Why? It's not your fault." I said. On the inside I was freaked out. She had cancer! What was going to happen!? Was she going to die! Lose her hair? I don't know much about cancer, but I'm pretty sure she was too young to get it. I always imagined older people in hospitals with lots of needles in their skin as cancer patients. Sophie can't become one of them. She's always so bright and energetic she can't be sick.
