a.n ; the injury y/n has in this chapter is a minor one. so while she did need help from the nurse to walk, she's still well enough to pilot an eva.

"An angel attack? Seriously?" Y/N's eyes widen in disbelief, forcing her body to move into an upright position as she ignores the aches and pains spreading across her skin.
There's no way Rei will be able to pilot an Eva in her condition! Why now of all times?!
"Yes, Commander Ikari wants you at unit one's cage along with Rei Ayanami." The nurse confirms, helping the girl rise to her feet. Y/N's form stumbles slightly, but eventually maintains an upright position as she leans on the nurse for support.
"Wh— huh? Rei, too? No— no, I can do it myself. She's a lot worse off, piloting an Eva in her condition..." Y/N's eyebrows furrow, a look of concern and confusion on her face. "I can pilot the Eva. Why does he want her there in the condition she's in?"
Y/N refrains from letting too much of her agitation show, aware that it's not the nurse's fault that Commander Ikari shows little regard for Rei's condition.
"I apologize, I wasn't informed of the reasoning." The nurse gives Y/N a brief look of pity.
"It's— it's fine, it's not your fault that he..." Y/N trails off, cutting her sentence short before she can finish. Honestly, she has no idea why Rei likes the commander so much when he can act so insufferable.
"Whatever, we need to get to the cage."

When Y/N arrives at the cage, she's met with the sight of an unfamiliar boy standing in the center of the bridge. The scene makes her pause for a split second before she takes note of a more familiar figure—
"Rei!" Y/N pushes away the pain stabbing through her leg to hurry forward to the gurney Rei was sitting on. Hands wrapping around the short metal railing that lined the edges of it.
Rei's expression morphed with surprise for a brief second before it contorts back into pain as a shudder wracks through her body.
"Rei..." Y/N repeats quietly, unused to seeing the girl display so much emotion.
"Commander Ikari, I... I can pilot the Eva, let Rei go back to her hospital room." Y/N demands, hands fall to her sides as she glares up at his figure— which stands on the bridge above the Eva.
The commander stares back down at her for a moment, no discernible emotions apparent on his face.
Y/N clenches her hands into fists, feeling her nails dig into her palm but paying no mind to the painful sensation. She knows that the last time she tried to synchronize with unit one it ended horribly. But still, she couldn't just let Rei do it, not in the state she's in.
